Chapter 94 Dark Thoughts

Her mind was still on the news about Nathan getting punched, but her eyes were already drawn back to the small figure at her door.

Theo took a step toward her. She immediately held up hand. “Don’t come any closer.”

Theo froze, but his eyes instantly welled up with tears, which began to roll down his cheeks.

Liana was taken aback.

His tears are on-demand?

“Ma’am.”

That’s what he called her this time.

Hearing it twisted something painful in Liana’s chest. Annoyed, but with no other choice, she stepped forward, crouching to his level.

Trying to keep her temper in check, she wiped his tears and asked, “What are you crying for? Big boys don’t cry over nothing, you know?”

Theo clearly didn’t know. The moment she touched his face, he burrowed into her arms.

Liana opened the door and carried him inside.

Theo clung to her neck, refusing to let go even after she sat down on the couch.

When she tried to gently pry his little hands from around her neck, he suddenly whimpered, “Ma’am, Theo hurts.”

She looked and saw a small scrape on his wrist as well.

Alarmed, Liana quickly checked him over for other injuries, then immediately grabbed her phone and called Elian.

It took a long time for anyone to answer. “Is this Mrs. Locke? This is Yvonne Yale, Mr. Locke’s secretary. He’s currently entertaining clients. Can I help you with something?”

“When will he be done?”

“At least another two hours. The partners tonight can really hold their liquor,” Yvonne explained.

Liana paused.

He’s drinking?

“Mrs. Locke, the boss said, if it’s about Theo’s injuries, please don’t worry. Theo got those from falling down the stairs a few days ago,” Yvonne added quickly.

“I see. Thank you,” Liana said and hung up shortly after.

But a sense of unease settled in her chest.

She looked at the scrape on Theo’s delicate wrist and the scab on his forehead.

Chapter 94 Dark Thoughts

How did a child just fall down the stairs?

Anya was his mother; she wouldn’t mistreat him.

Not wanting to jump to dark conclusions, she simply studied him quietly.

A sudden thought struck her. Could Theo’s attachment to her be because she and Anya were half-sisters, sharing a bloodline?

After the call. Yvonne gently placed the phone back on Elian’s desk. “Mr. Locke, Mrs. Locke has hung up.”

“What did she say?” Elian asked, seated alone in his executive chair behind the imposing desk.

“Just that she knew.

“Mhm. You can head home. Elian said, his expression old and distant.

After Yvonne left. he picked up his phone, staring at it.

He’d purposely had Yvonne say he was drinking with clients, hoping for a flicker of concern. Instead…

He let out a short, self-mocking laugh and stood up, heading out.

Xander and the others were waiting for him at the club

The moment Elian arrived, the supposedly “client-punched” man, Nathan, poured him a drink and asked with a sheepish grin. “So. Elian, did you confess your feelings?”

“Couldn’t do it.” Elian replied, taking the glass and leaning back, his tone flat.

“I told you to just say it,” Xander reminded him.

“Wouldn’t matter now. She wouldn’t take it if I handed her the moon,” Elian said, shaking his head dismissively.

“Honestly, what’s the point?” Jett chimed in. “What if she just throws it back in your face? You confess and get rejected? That’s just humiliating.”

Elian’s expression darkened instantly.

But under his friends’ collective gaze, he quickly stood up, grabbed a bottle of whiskey, and turned to leave.

“Where are you going?”

“To get humiliated,” Elian replied, his long legs carrying him swiftly out of the private room.

He drove to the parking lot of Liana’s apartment building. His elegant fingers tapped restlessly against the neck of the whiskey bottle on the passenger seat.

Back upstairs, Liana had fed Theo, given him a bath, and was now applying ointment to his scrapes.

Theo lay quietly on her pillow, face down.
