The words struck Jasmine like a physical blow, sending a wave of agonizing pain through her. A sudden surge of nausea hit her, and she rushed into the bathroom to throw up.
Eleanor followed her inside, her suspicions immediately aroused.
“Are you pregnant?”
Jasmine took a long moment to steady herself before answering. “No. My stomach is just acting up.”
“I didn’t think so,” Eleanor said. “I still can’t believe Silas actually slept with his own sister-in-law. Jasmine. how could you keep something that massive from me? And what about the divorce? Are you really going through with it? You need to think this through. Once you leave the Vance family, you’ll be absolutely nothing, and you’ll have nothing left.”
Looking at her ghostly pale reflection in the mirror, Jasmine felt a sudden ache for the baby in her womb
This poor little life was already suffering so much just by being hers.
“You don’t need to worry,” Jasmine said. “Even if I end up begging on the streets, I won’t do it on your doorstep.”
Eleanor looked relieved. “You said it, not me. Just make sure you aren’t just talking a big game.”
Jasmine’s heart felt completely dead. “I mean it.”
Satisfied, Eleanor turned to leave, but as she reached the door, she hesitated and stepped back inside.
“Jasmine…”
Jasmine could hear a hint of helplessness in her voice, but she ignored it. This house had broken her heart completely, and the very name Eleanor had become a living nightmare.
Eleanor gave her a long, meaningful look. “Whatever happens, don’t blame me.”
Jasmine figured it was just a fleeting whim and paid the comment no mind.
In the end, Jasmine only took two things that had belonged to Arthur: a pen and a small plush toy.
The pen was a birthday gift she had bought him using her own scholarship money. She had no idea he 1 had kept it all this time. The toy was a prize she had won at a shooting gallery when Arthur took her out
shopping years ago, and he had treasured that all this time, too.
Looking at the two items, Jasmine felt tears welling up again, but she forced them back.
When she walked out of Grand Manor, she didn’t look back once. She was never coming back to this place again.
When Jasmine got back to Moonlight Terrace, she could hear Margaret shouting from all the way across the apartment.

“Jasmine! Why on earth did you buy so many steaks?”
Jasmine froze, mid-stride, as she was changing out of her shoes. “Steaks?” She hadn’t ordered any meat.
“Yeah, a whole box of them,” Margaret said. “When I came home just now, I found a box sitting at the door with your name on it. Didn’t you have it delivered?”
Jasmine walked over to take a look. Sure enough, they were from the exact restaurant she and Sierra had been talking about earlier that day. But that place didn’t even offer delivery; if you wanted their food, you had to go pick it up yourself and wait in a notoriously long line. Even when Jasmine craved it, the mere thought of that endless queue was usually enough to make her give up.
She ran through the possibilities. Sierra had mentioned she had to work overtime tonight, so it definitely wasn’t her. Aside from the two of them, the only other person there had been Ethan.
Could it be…?
Jasmine pulled out her phone and drafted a text: [Did you buy these steaks?]
Ethan replied a few minutes later: [I happened to be passing by.]
Jasmine was highly skeptical of that excuse, but she didn’t press the matter. Instead, she texted back: [Looks like you bought out the whole restaurant.]
Ethan: [I just didn’t want to wait in line.]
Jasmine: [So you bought every single steak they had? The owner actually agreed to that?]
Ethan: [I offered double.]
Jasmine was speechless.
There was no denying it-the man was obscenely rich.
Before she could finish typing her next reply, her phone rang, cutting her off.
“Hello, Ms. Thorne. My name is Benjamin Chase, and I’m an attorney with the Harrington Law Firm Im calling regarding the will your father left before he passed. I’d like to discuss it with you-could you come down to our office?”
Jasmine listened in utter bewilderment.
Her father’s will?
“Ms. Thorne, I would strongly prefer to discuss this in person,” Benjamin continued “So if you could make your way over as soon as possible, I’d appreciate it. This is a matter of utmost importance
The next day, Jasmine went to the Harrington Law Firm to meet with Benjamin. He led her into a private conference room and closed the door behind them.
“Ms. Thorne, your father left a will with our firm, and I was designated as the executor.” He opened a
