Jasmine rubbed her face. “They are not.”

“I have to work late tonight,” Sierra said, “otherwise I’d take you out for some amazing food. You love the steaks at that one place, right? Let’s go tomorrow instead. I’ll take you after I get off work.”

Jasmine couldn’t help but laugh. “That steakhouse is way out in the suburbs. It takes over an hour just to drive there. Let’s wait until you’re not so busy.”

“An hour is nothing,” Sierra insisted, “as long as it makes you happy.”

“Thank you, Sierra,” Jasmine said sincerely.

And thank you, Ethan, she added in her head.

Ethan’s phone rang. After taking the call, he had to head out. “I have something to take care of. You two take your time and catch up.”

Sierra teased, “Aren’t you worried we’ll steal those expensive models in your cabinet, Ethan?”

A row of glass cases displayed Ethan’s prized possessions: a collection of limited-edition model cars.

Ethan offered a faint smile. “Take whatever you like.”

Sierra stuck out her tongue. “See? That’s just how generous Ethan is.”

Once Ethan left, Jasmine suddenly remembered something important, Back when they ran into those thugs, Ethan had handed her his mother’s watch for safekeeping, and she still hadn’t returned it. She remembered slipping it into her coat pocket at the time.

Her coat… Margaret had taken it to the dry cleaners, hadn’t she?

A wave of anxiety hit Jasmine. She could only hope Margaret had taken the watch out first.

They talked for about half an hour, during which Sierra’s phone rang at least four or five times. Knowing how swamped Sierra was, Jasmine urged her to get back to work, so Sierra finally said goodbye.

Jasmine checked the time and got up to leave as well. She still needed to make a trip to the Thorne estate to pick up some important things.

As she passed Lauren’s desk again, Jasmine nodded politely in appreciation.

Lauren stood up and handed her a box with both hands. “These are the rest of the energy bites I made. Mr. Brooks said you liked them, so he told me to pack them all up for you.”

Looking at the large container of energy bites, Jasmine wanted to laugh, but mostly, she just felt incredibly touched.

When Jasmine returned to Grand Manor, the sheer emptiness of the house was almost chilling. The only person in the living room was a maid, who stopped cleaning and blinked in surprise when she saw her.

Chapter 145 The Steaks

“Oh, Jasmine. You’re back.”

“I just came to pick up a few things,” Jasmine said. “Where is everyone?”

“Mrs. Vance is upstairs. Hugh went out.”

Jasmine sighed. It seemed even losing their father hadn’t been enough of a wake-up call for Hugh. Now that the backbone of the Thorne family was gone, he was supposed to step up and take responsibility. Yet, he still cared about nothing but enjoying himself.

Jasmine headed upstairs. As she reached the landing, Eleanor stepped out of her room. Her face looked even more haggard than Jasmine’s.

Jasmine didn’t bother greeting her. With Arthur gone, any lingering attachment she had to this house had completely vanished.

For once, Eleanor didn’t immediately snap at her. Her voice sounded raspy as she spoke. “What are you doing back at a time like this?”

“I’m just here to grab a few things,” Jasmine replied flatly. “I’ll be gone as soon as I’m done.”

“What things?”

“Nothing valuable. Just some of Dad’s personal belongings. I want something to remember him by.”

Eleanor scoffed. “He’s dead. What’s the point of keeping a bunch of useless objects?”

The comment grated on Jasmine’s nerves. “I’m not going to argue with you. I’m taking my things and leaving. Don’t worry, I won’t ever come back to this house again, and I’ll keep my promise to you.”

Instead of launching into a tirade, Eleanor merely let out a heavy, weary sigh. “I’m planning to sell all my shares in the conglomerate.”

Jasmine froze in her tracks. “Sell them?”

“You know as well as I do that Hugh is too young to handle a company this size,” Eleanor said. “And I don’t have the energy to manage it. We’re better off just selling.”

Jasmine felt a tightness in her chest. “Hugh is incompetent because of how you raised him. And as for you -it’s not that you don’t have the energy, you just don’t want the responsibility.”

Eleanor suppressed her rising temper. “Jasmine, it’s easy for you to criticize. How do you expect Hugh and me to run a massive conglomerate? It’s better to sell it than to watch it collapse under our watch. I’m doing what’s best for the company!”

“Shut up!” Jasmine snapped, seeing right through her. “Don’t pretend this is for the company. You’re doing this for your son. You want to cash out and transfer all the money to Hugh’s name so he can coast through the rest of his life without lifting a finger, don’t you?”
