“Fortunately, the doctors saved her, but she lost her sanity and could no longer even recognize her own daughter.”
So, her biological mother had never wanted to abandon her.
Jasmine gripped her collar tightly and closed her eyes, forcing herself to keep listening.
“With her goal achieved and using her connections, Eleanor brought you into the Thorne family,” Arthur said, his voice cracking. “But to ensure the truth would never come to light, she had your mother committed to a mental institution, hoping she would never get out or see you again.”
He began to sob openly.
“Jasmine, I am guilty. I should have stopped her. I shouldn’t have just stood by and let Eleanor hurt your biological mother and hurt you. To try and make amends, I secretly sneaked your mother out of that asylum and moved her to a quiet, secluded nursing home. I forged a death certificate to make Eleanor believe she had passed away, knowing it was the only way she would finally let it go and stop trying to hurt her. The nursing home is out toward the countryside, but the facilities and environment are wonderful. I hired the best private caretakers to look after her, but for safety’s sake, I couldn’t visit often. For years, I only dared to slip away and see her once a year when Eleanor went on vacation. After Eleanor nearly caught me one time, I stopped going entirely, but I still had people I trusted go check on her for me. Though her mind never recovered, thank God her physical health has remained perfectly fine because of the excellent care she receives.”
Arthur wiped his eyes before continuing. “The address of the nursing home is in a bank safety deposit box. Along with that, I’ve left you a few other things. I originally planned to give them to you when you married the right man, but it looks like I won’t live to see that day. Jasmine, I’m so sorry… I haven’t been a good father, and you’ve suffered so much over the years because of me. I was selfish, foolish, and too much of a coward to ever tell you the truth. I was terrified that once you knew, you wouldn’t want to stay in the Thorne family for another second, and you’d never call me Dad again. Jasmine, you have no idea-from the moment you became my daughter, you gave me something to look forward to in life. I’ve actually spent all these years trying to track down your biological father. Sadly, I never found him, but I know he must love you, and I’m sure he is a truly remarkable man. If he never came back for you, I’m sure he had no choice. So please, don’t hate him. If your mother ever regains her sanity, I know she will tell you everything about him, and the three of you will finally be reunited. I pray that day comes. If I’m still around when it does, I will get down on my knees and beg for their forgiveness.”
Arthur’s expression turned desperate. “Jasmine, we are entirely to blame for all of this, and I know I have absolutely no right to ask this of you. But Eleanor and I were husband and wife for a long time, and I can’t bear the thought of her and Hugh spending the rest of their lives in misery and ruin. So, I am begging you –for the sake of the twenty-plus years we spent raising you, please spare your mother. I’m begging you.”
On screen, Arthur suddenly stood up and dropped to his knees.
Whatever he said after that was lost on Jasmine. Her vision was completely blurred by tears. There were no loud, agonizing screams, just silent tears streaming down her face like a broken string of pearls.
What a cruel, twisted joke life was.

Jasmine shut her laptop, walked over to the chaise lounge by the window, and sank into it. Outside, the winter wind howled and wailed, sounding like a funeral dirge.
She sat there on the daybed all night, staring into space until dawn broke. She hadn’t slept a wink.
Only when the first light of morning filtered in did the exhaustion finally hit her, and she drifted off right there on the lounge.
When Margaret walked in, she gasped in shock.
“Jasmine! Why aren’t you sleeping in bed?” Margaret rushed over anxiously, wrapping a blanket around her. “My goodness, if you keep running yourself ragged like this, your body is going to give out. Jasmine I know you’re hurting, but what’s done is done. You have to try to make peace with it and accept reality. If Arthur saw you like this, he wouldn’t be able to rest in peace.”
Father…
Jasmine shifted slightly, closing her eyes to nurse the throbbing ache in her temples. She no longer knew how to feel about her father. Was she supposed to love him, or hate him?
“By the way, Margaret,” Jasmine said, “the last time I had you take that off-white coat to the dry cleaners, did you take the watch out of the pocket?”
Margaret blinked, caught off guard. “A watch?”
