Jasmine suppressed a laugh. “I’m furious. But what can I do?”

Jasmine’s face turned serious.

“Chloe, you shouldn’t say things like that out loud.”

Chloe was stunned by the sudden use of her name.

“The Vance family prides itself on its reputation. If people hear you, they’ll think there’s incest going on.

“Will they think your brother is heartless for hitting on his own sister-in-law? Or will they think Felicity is a shameless slut who couldn’t wait for her husband’s grave to get cold before seducing her brother-in-law to get back on top?

“People have mean mouths. They’ll say things way worse than that.”

“Jasmine!” Chloe slammed her hand on the table. “How dare you say those things! Incest? Seducing? They’re in love!”

Jasmine almost burst out laughing.

This girl was so incredibly naive.

Chloe was fuming.

She’d said it just to hurt Jasmine.

Instead, she was the one who felt like she’d been slapped.

Chloe lost her temper, grabbed her glass of milk, and threw it right at Jasmine’s face.

Jasmine didn’t even move. She let the milk hit her full force.

It dripped down her cheeks and onto her black sweater.

She looked absolutely miserable.

Mrs. Gable ran out, screaming. “Oh, Miss Chloe! What are you doing? Ma’am is your sister- in-law! You can’t treat her like this!”

The commotion brought the rest of the Vances out instantly.

Felicity was feeding the baby and looked like she wanted to bring him over just to see the show.

But Silas stopped her.

Seeing Jasmine looking so disheveled, Silas felt a sudden pang of discomfort.

“What is going on! Chloe, you’ve crossed the line!”

Chloe kept her head held high, looking defiant. “Silas! This woman is horrible! She needs to be taught a lesson!”

Silas was about to yell.

Madeline stopped him. “Silas, your sister is always sensible. She wouldn’t do this without a reason. You should ask what happened first.”

That was the funniest joke Jasmine had heard all day.

Victoria, of course, sided with her daughter.

“Exactly, Silas. Don’t go accusing your own sister.”

Madeline added, “Chloe, don’t be afraid. Tell Grandmother what happened. I’ll handle this.”

With her support squad behind her, Chloe became even more emboldened, grabbing Madeline’s arm.

“Grandmother, you have to help me. She was bullying me just now.”

Madeline stroked her hair and shot Jasmine a look of pure disgust.

Jasmine took the towel Mrs. Gable handed her and slowly started to wipe her face.

She wasn’t in a hurry. She wanted to see what kind of story Chloe would spin.

“I just said Silas helped Felicity with Leo last night because he was crying,” Chloe said, looking smug. “And this woman started calling us names.”

“She said!” Chloe’s face lit up with glee. “She said Silas and Felicity are incestuous! She said the Vance family honor is a joke!

“Grandmother! Mom! Listen to how disgusting she is!”

“Jasmine!” Madeline exploded. “You’re the eldest daughter-in-law of this house. Even if you can’t be a role model, how can you use such filth!

“Silas and Felicity have been close since before they were married. They’re like brother and sister! How dare you speak of incest!”

Victoria was just as furious. “Exactly! You’re supposed to be educated, but you act like a common thug!

“Silas! Look! This is the ‘wonderful’ woman you married!”

Silas’s brow was knit tight. He looked at Jasmine. “Is this true?”

“Does it matter if it’s true?” Victoria snapped. “Silas! Are you saying you don’t believe your own sister?”

Silas just stared at Jasmine. “I’m asking you. Did you say those things?”
