Chapter 16 The Truth on Record

Chapter 16 The Truth on Record

“I want to hear it from your own mouth,” Silas demanded.

“If you think it’s true, then it’s true,” Jasmine replied. “I don’t care.”

Silas’s brow furrowed even deeper.

No shouting, no crying, no resistance at all. She had been splashed with milk, yet she remained as calm as if nothing had happened.

What on earth is this woman thinking?

Silas felt a strange tightness in his chest.

“Chloe, I’m asking you one more time!” He looked at his sister with a piercing gaze. “Are you lying?”

Chloe flinched under his stare.

“Silas! You’d actually believed an outsider over your own flesh and blood?

“I—”

“Enough!” Madeline snapped. “Silas, stop bullying your sister. I believe Chloe. She wouldn’t frame her for no reason.”

“Jasmine!” Madeline looked at her with pure disdain. “Since the day you married into this family, you’ve contributed nothing. Instead, you constantly antagonize Silas and make him miserable.

“You live in our house, eat our food, and spend our money. You don’t have to work a day in your life. You should be grateful to the Vances and to Silas.

“But look at you! You can’t even produce an heir, yet you’re an expert at spreading lies! Are you trying to ruin our family’s reputation?

“It seems a proper punishment is the only way to handle this today!”

Madeline spoke with absolute authority. “Go to the courtyard and kneel. Reflect on your actions. Don’t get up until I give you permission.”

“Grandmother…” Silas started, feeling a pang of guilt. “Jasmine…”

“Silas! Do you intend to defy me for her? Don’t forget, I am still the head of this house!”

Silas weighed the situation in his mind and eventually swallowed his words.

He wasn’t willing to provoke Madeline’s wrath for Jasmine’s sake.

Jasmine didn’t move a muscle.

“Jasmine! Didn’t you hear what Grandmother said!” Victoria barked. “Get on your knees!”

Jasmine suddenly let out a laugh.

It was a laugh filled with three parts helplessness and seven parts mockery.

Victoria glared at her. “What are you laughing at? Do you have no respect for your elders?”

“I’ve finally seen it for myself today,” Jasmine said slowly. “Total blindness to the truth. The dark ages are long gone, yet the Vances are still playing the role of tyrants.

“Because you’re biased against me from the start, no explanation I give would ever matter to you.”

Jasmine let out a soft scoff..

“You’ve hated me for a long time. You’re just using this as an excuse to break me. You never actually cared about the truth.”

Victoria tried to snap back, but Madeline stopped her.

“So, are you implying that Chloe is the one lying?”

“What if she is?” Jasmine countered.

Madeline snorted. “Everything requires proof.”

It was just this woman and Chloe in the room. Madeline wanted to see what kind of proof Jasmine could possibly have.

Seeing Jasmine’s silence, Madeline assumed she was struggling to find evidence and added another blow.

“If you can prove that Chloe is at fault, I will personally punish her today.”

“Grandmother,” Chloe whispered, feeling a sudden chill.

Madeline patted the back of her hand to reassure her.

Chloe shot Jasmine a smug, arrogant look.

Silas stepped closer to Jasmine and whispered, “Stop making a scene. Just apologize to Grandmother, and I’ll try to get the punishment waived.”

Jasmine looked at him with a half-smile. “You? Begging for me?”

Waiting for Silas to help her would be like waiting for a miracle that would never come.

In the past, when she was wronged, she always hoped her husband would stand up for her.

Now she realized that was like looking for a diamond in a trash heap.

It only degraded and disgusted her.

“In that case, I’d love to know,” Jasmine said. “How exactly will Grandmother punish her?”

Madeline was so certain Jasmine had nothing that her answer was firm and resolute.
