Silas’ face grew stony.

“Jasmine, why do you have to keep pushing this? Did you forget? Everything’s spelled out in the divorce
papers.
“Until the divorce is final and public, you’re supposed to keep up appearances whenever I need you. You agreed to it yourself.”
Jasmine looked up, a hint of irony flashing in her eyes.
“I’m done pretending. What are you gonna do about it?”
Silas seemed like he’d seen that coming.
“Then kiss the fifty million dollars goodbye.”
“Oh really?”
“All you’ll get is the condo and one car. You really think you can make it on just that?”
Jasmine stayed quiet for a long moment.
Dealing with Silas was exhausting.
“Jasmine, think it through. Eleanor’s pretty much cut you off from the Thorne family for good. You’re on your own now. With that fifty million, if you play your cards right, you could live pretty comfortably. But
without it…”
Silas’ voice dripped with clear contempt.
“Without it, with what you’ve got going for you, life’s gonna get real rough.”
A faint, almost invisible smile touched the corner of Jasmine’s lips.
“Well… I guess we’ll just have to see about that.”
Silas frowned hard.
“You’d really throw away that kind of money? Jasmine, don’t be stupid.”
“It’s not about the money. It’s just…”
Jasmine shot Silas a brief, cold look.
“I used to be naive. And I paid the price for it. But what you and the Vances did to me… you’re gonna pay for it too.”
Silas felt a twinge of unease.

“What are you talking about?”
Jasimine replied, “Didn’t I tell you? You’ll find out soon enough.”
Silas had run out of patience.
“Fine. Have it your way.”
He turned to leave.
Jasmine called after him.
“Now what?” he snapped, without looking back.
Calmly, she said, “There’s something I think you should know.”
“What?”

“That little rendezvous with your sister-in-law in the backseat the other day-didn’t something feel off to you?”
Silas stopped in his tracks.
“What do you mean?”
Jasmine started heading back inside as she spoke.
“Figure it out yourself, Silas. You’re not so dumb that you only think with your pants, are you?”
With that, the door shut firmly behind her.
Silas stood outside, fuming, tempted to kick the door.
But his mind kept going back to what she’d said.
Something off?
That day, his self-control really had been unusually weak.
He’d figured it was just the drinks and that rich bisque he’d had at dinner.
But now he wondered…
Margaret had been listening by the door and caught most of the conversation.
When Jasmine came back, Margaret scowled in the direction Silas had gone.
Then she made sure to reassure Jasmine.
“Sweetie, we don’t need their dirty money. Don’t you worry. Once my hand’s better, I’ll find a job. I’ll take care of you.”

Jasmine hugged her tightly.
“Margaret, you’re too good to me.”
This kind of real care was something rare and precious.

“But I’m not so helpless that I need my dear nanny to support me. Just wait, Margaret. You’ll see what I’m really made of.
“Once I’ve made enough, I’ll take you with me-we’ll go wherever you want. How does that sound?”
Margaret broke into a wide, warm smile.
“Alright, alright. I’ll be right here waiting. My girl is sharp and tough-you’re gonna do just fine.”
Talking with Margaret always lifted Jasmine’s spirits.
She showed Margaret what she’d brought back from the safe deposit box.
Margaret’s eyes went wide.
“Goodness, sweetie… where did all this come from?”
Jasmine felt a pang in her chest.
“Dad saved it for me in secret. He was afraid Eleanor would find out, so he kept it at the bank.”
Margaret let out a slow, heavy sigh.
“Your father always did love you dearly.”
Jasmine said, “Margaret, I’m going to head out for a while.”
“Where to, honey?”
Jasmine hesitated briefly.
Margaret waved a hand gently.
“Never mind, you don’t have to tell me now.”
Jasmine took her hand.
