Jasmine pushed the bag containing the box through the door, then pulled it shut behind her. “If you have something to say, say it here.”
Silas didn’t push it. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it. “I was impulsive that day. I should not have lost my composure in front of your father’s memorial. I owe you an apology.”
Jasmine was dismissive. “I do not need a cheap apology. Not every mistake can be solved with a single sorry.”
“But your father’s death truly had nothing to do with me,” Silas said.
“I only have one question for you.”
“Go ahead.”
Jasmine looked him in the eye. “That day at the hospital, did you or did you not say that it would benefit you if my father never woke up?”
Silas froze, caught completely off guard.
“Unwilling to admit it, or just too cowardly?” Jasmine mocked.
Silas took a heavy drag from his cigarette. “You eavesdropped on my conversation with Felicity?”
Jasmine’s gaze turned ice-cold. “I didn’t need to eavesdrop. You two were chatting away in plain sight.”
“I was just talking out loud,” Silas muttered. “It didn’t mean anything.”
“It meant exactly what you were thinking.” Jasmine looked up at the sky. It was heavy and overcast. In the blink of an eye, winter had quietly arrived. No wonder she had been feeling chilled to the bone lately. “Silas, I knew you were a piece of work, but I didn’t realize you had absolutely no bottom line. You actually care so little about a human life just to get your hands on Thorne Enterprises.”
Silas’s face darkened. “Jasmine! I know losing your father is devastating, but you don’t get to pin his death on me! Would he still be alive if I hadn’t said that? Maybe it was just his time to go. None of us could have changed that.”
“You’re right, maybe that was his fate,” Jasmine replied coldly. “But you were the one who gave him the final push.”
“It wasn’t me!” Silas snapped, finally losing his patience. “I told you, our entire conversation that day was perfectly calm. He wasn’t upset at all! How was I supposed to know something would happen to him the minute he got back to his room? For all we know, something else triggered it after he went back!”
Jasmine just stared at him in silence, her expression entirely numb. As far as she was concerned, Silas had zero credibility left. She would never know how many of the words coming out of his mouth were actually
true.
Silas forced himself to calm down. “Jasmine, please. Just trust me, okay?”

Jasmine scoffed. “You think you’re still worth trusting? Besides, whether I believe you or not doesn’t even matter anymore. We’re getting a divorce.”
“We’re getting a divorce, but we aren’t divorced yet,” Silas said. “Technically, you’re still my wife.
“Don’t use that word. It makes me sick,” Jasmine said. “Have you already forgotten how you shielded your little darling right in front of my father’s memorial?”
“You forced my hand!” Silas snapped.
A few stray raindrops fell from the sky, brushing against Jasmine’s cheek. She wiped them away, her expression hollow and distant.
“Listen to me, Silas. The Jasmine you think you know isn’t the real me. Before long, you’re going to find out exactly what I’m truly capable of. For years, because I loved you and wanted to please your family. I kept my head down and forced myself to be exactly who you and the Vances wanted me to be. I’m exhausted, and I regret every second of it. I have absolutely nothing left to lose now, which means I have absolutely nothing left to fear.”
Her words sent a sudden chill down Silas’s spine. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“You’ll find out soon enough,” she replied indifferently.
As Jasmine turned to leave, Silas caught her by the arm. “I came here today because I actually need to talk to you about something.”
Jasmine yanked her arm out of his grip. “From now on, do not touch me with the hands you have used to hold other women. I find it filthy.”
Silas swallowed his rising anger. “There’s a gala tomorrow night. Government officials will be there, and Mr. Crawford is attending too. We already missed the last one because your father was in the hospital. We can’t skip this one, or people are going to start whispering that our marriage is on the rocks.”
