As if trying to hold on to the lingering sense of her mother’s presence, Jasmine refused to leave-no matter how long it took.

Serena finally had to speak up.

“The patient needs to rest now. We should go.”

Reluctantly, Jasmine followed him out.

Once Serena left to take care of his own business, Jasmine kept asking around, unwilling to accept she’d heard.

But everyone who knew anything told her the same thing: Anna was really gone.

The last flicker of hope inside her slowly faded away.

what

She returned to the car, shut the door, and rested her forehead against the steering wheel. Before she knew it, tears were streaming down her face.

She cried until her head began to swim, forcing herself to finally pull it together.

That morning, Margaret had thoughtfully packed some food for the road and left it in the car.

Jasmine opened the insulated container.

The meal was still warm.

But she had no appetite.

Even so, she made herself take a few bites.

On the drive over, she’d even let herself imagine that after the baby came, her child would have a grandma.

But now…

After a few mouthfuls, she gave up and put the container away.

She rested a little while longer, then got ready to head back to Rivercrest.

If the return trip went as smoothly as the drive there, she’d make it back before too late.

By then, a light rain had started to fall.

Jasmine started the engine, took one last look at the sanatorium, and drove off.

When Sierra’s call came through, Jasmine’s car had been stuck in the same spot for nearly an hour.

It hit her then-the old saying about not listening to your elders really did come true sometimes.

Heavy rains had triggered another landslide, worse than before. She couldn’t move forward, and turning back wasn’t an option either. All she could do was wait.

“What!” Sierra’s voice was tense on the other end. “So what’s the plan? You can’t just stay in the car overnight. It’s getting dark, and it’s cold up there. You won’t last like that.”

Jasmine tried to sound reassuring.

“It’s fine, I’m sure they’ll clear the road soon.”

After hanging up, Sierra paced around her apartment a dozen times before an idea struck her.

She called Caleb.

That guy always had connections and could maybe pull some strings to help Jasmine out.

But the phone rang and rang with no answer.

Sierra muttered in frustration before finally making up her mind-she headed straight to Ethan’s office.

When she knocked and entered, Ethan was in the middle of giving Zack some instructions.

Zack noticed her hurried demeanor and couldn’t resist teasing her.

“Ms. Reed, what’s the rush? You look like you’re being chased.”

Sierra went right up to Ethan.

“Mr. Brooks, it’s about Jasmine. She’s in trouble.”

Ethan stilled for a moment.

“Take a breath. Tell me what happened.”

Sierra explained the situation.

After hearing her out, Zack let out a relieved sigh.

“Ms. Reed, next time, maybe don’t make it sound so serious right off the bat. A landslide isn’t ideal, but as long as she’s safe, it’s just a matter of waiting it out.”

Sierra shot back, “Who knows how long that’ll take? Plus, Jasmine’s only wearing a light jacket. I’m worried she’ll freeze. But honestly…”

She glanced toward Zack, who caught her meaning but didn’t take offense.

“You two talk. I’ve got things to wrap up.”

With that, he made a quick exit.

Once they were alone, Sierra lowered her voice. “Mr. Brooks, Jasmine’s in a really rough spot emotionally

right now. She’s not doing well because…”

Ten minutes later, Zack got a call from Ethan.

He only said one thing, “Get me to Chestnut Grove. Fast.”

Zack didn’t ask questions. “Understood. I’ll arrange it.”

Right then, Sierra knew she’d come to the right person.

“Thank you, Mr. Brooks.”

Ethan looked at her. “Coming along?”

“Absolutely. I won’t feel okay until I see for myself that Jasmine’s safe.”

“Alright. Go get ready.”

Just after Sierra left the office, Caleb finally returned her call.

She answered with an edge in her voice. “Took you long enough. Don’t bother-it’s already handled.”

Caleb was clueless. “Hey, I’ve got a life too, you know. Can’t just stare at my phone all day.”

Sierra brushed him off. “We’re good. Don’t need your help anymore. I’m busy. Bye.”

On the other end, Caleb shook his head.

One of his buddies nearby couldn’t help but needle him.

“A woman who hangs up on you first? That’s a first. She must be something special. Who is she?”

Caleb smirked.

“Someone I wouldn’t marry if my life depended on it-zero femininity. But as a friend? She’s not half bad.”
