Chapter 155 The Death Certificate
Chapter 155 The Death Certificate
The car pulled up at the entrance of Sanoviv Sanatorium.
Arthur had been correct-even out in the countryside, the place made a strong impression.
The grounds were immaculate, dotted with fitness stations and well-kept gardens. It really wouldn’t be a bad spot to spend one’s later years.
Jasmine felt a swell of emotion.
After all this time, she was finally going to see the mother she’d been longing for day and night. What would she even say? Should she go in for a hug? Would her mother turn her away?
She worried, too, that after so many years they might feel like strangers, with nothing to talk about.
Standing outside the gate, Jasmine’s thoughts raced.
She almost laughed at herself. After everything she’d endured, why was she getting as nervous as a kid on the first day of school?
A staff member-a kind-looking woman-noticed Jasmine standing out in the chill, lost in thought, and walked over.
“Miss, are you looking for someone?”
The question brought Jasmine back.
“Yes,” she replied. “I’m trying to find someone named Anna Whitmore.”
The woman paused to think. “Anna…?”
“That’s right,” Jasmine said eagerly. “She’s been living here for more than twenty years. You must know her.
The woman offered a polite smile. “I’m fairly new here, and with so many residents, I’m afraid I don’t recall the name. You should ask the dean, Ms. Danes. She’s been here since Sanoviv first opened-never
left.”
Jasmine tried to keep her hope in check.
“Could you take me to her, please?”
“Of course, but you’ll have to wait a little while. Serena just stepped out-probably be back in an hour or
so.”
“I’ll wait.”
She’d waited twenty-eight years. What was one more hour?
The woman showed Jasmine into Serena’s office.

“You can wait in here. It’s cold outside-looks like rain might roll in soon.”
As she spoke, she poured Jasmine a cup of hot water.

“The weather in Chestnut Grove tends to be colder than in other towns. You’re not dressed very warmly- be careful not to catch a chill.”
Jasmine gave an awkward smile.
“It really is colder here. I left in such a rush that I didn’t pack a heavier coat. But it’s been fine-mostly stayed in the car.”
The woman added kindly, “Do drive carefully, though. There’ve been several landslides on the mountain roads lately. The county’s working on repairs, but it’ll be a while before they’re done.”
Jasmine felt a touch of warmth at her concern.
“Thank you-I’ll be careful.”
An hour and a half later, Serena returned.
Jasmine’s heart, which had settled somewhat, began to pound again. She hurried forward.
“Serena?”
Serena was nearing sixty, neatly dressed and composed.
“Yes? Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for a woman named Anna. She’s been living here?”
Serena’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
“Anna?”
“Yes,” Jasmine confirmed. “Anna.”
“And you are…?”
Not ready to explain everything, Jasmine held back.
“I’m a distant relative’s daughter. I came to visit her.”
Serena’s voice softened. “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Anna passed away several months ago.”
It felt like a lightning strike.
All the hope, the joy, the nervous excitement that had carried her here began to dissolve in that moment- slowly draining away until her heart dropped straight into a pit of emptiness.
“Serena… what did you say?”

Chapter 155 The Death Certificate
Serena spoke gently, matter-of-factly.
“Anna died a little over four months ago. I have her death certificate here if you’d like to see it.”
Jasmine watched Serena’s movements as if the world were tilting around her.
Really-was this some kind of joke?
It seemed life was determined never to grant her even a sliver of warmth.
Serena handed her the certificate.
“Here, you can look.”

Jasmine stared at the name “Anna Whitmore” printed on the form. Serena’s voice seemed to fade in and out of focus.
“It was a sudden brain hemorrhage. It happened very quickly. There wasn’t time to do much.”
Jasmine stood in silence for a long moment.
“Could you… Take me to see where she used to live?”
“Of course,” Serena said. “But someone else is staying in that room now. Let me speak with them first.”
Jasmine didn’t answer-just nodded.
