Chapter 161 The Honest Conversation
Chapter 161 The Honest Conversation
“No. Ever since I launched Zenith Tech, I’ve been getting up around six every morning.”
Jasmine felt a wave of relief.
“Oh, good, I was afraid I’d woken you.”
Ethan asked, “Want to try and sleep a little more?”
Jasmine pushed herself up halfway.
“No, I’m actually fine. Slept really well.”
It had been ages since she’d slept so soundly-not since Arthur passed away.

Then a thought struck her, and she let out a light laugh, tossing out the remark almost without thinking.
“You know, I’m starting to think you’re not just my good luck charm-you’re practically a sleeping aid.”
She hadn’t meant anything by it; it was just a throwaway line.
But a casual joke to one person can land as something more to another.
A subtle shift passed through Ethan’s eyes, so fleeting it was easy to miss.
“You’ve just been wound too tight lately. Your mind and body were both exhausted.”
“Yeah,” Jasmine agreed. “Probably.”
Right then, her stomach growled loud enough to be heard across the quiet room.
Ethan chuckled softly.
“Your body’s calling the shots now. No matter what’s going on, you’ve gotta eat when it’s time to eat and sleep when it’s time to sleep. Starving yourself or running on empty isn’t going to change how things turn
out.”
Jasmine smiled faintly.
“Yes, sir.”
The hotel’s complimentary breakfast was, to put it kindly, modest.
A bowl of plain rolled oats, soft scrambled eggs, a slice of white toast, and a single-serve pot of fruit
preserve.
Jasmine glanced at the spread, then at Ethan.
“Um… if this isn’t your thing, we could go out for something better?”

Ethan was struggling to peel the seal off the fruit preserve cup.
“It’s simple, but it’s clean. Light breakfasts aren’t so bad.”
Jasmine watched him fumble for a second before reaching over.
“Here, let me.”
She took it and, out of pure habit, tore it open with her teeth.
When she looked up, Ethan was watching her with a smile.
There was something almost tender in his expression.
Thinking he was judging her, Jasmine gave an awkward laugh.
“Sorry, force of habit. I’ll grab you another one.”

Even though Jasmine was a Thorne, Eleanor had never exactly raised her to act like one-she’d been left to figure things out on her own.
Through college, she’d worked part-time jobs to cover her expenses, living pretty much like any other student on a budget.
So she’d grown used to a no-fuss, practical way of doing things.
And if that meant she didn’t fit some high-society mold, well, it also meant she felt free.
Ethan didn’t seem bothered in the least.
“I like that about you.”
Jasmine’s smile softened slightly.
“Does it ever bother you that I’m not… You know, polished like some trust-fund girl?”
Ethan shook his head. “What’s wrong with being who you are? Nobody gets to decide how a person with money is supposed to act.”
“That’s probably why I always feel so comfortable around you,” she admitted.
No pretense, no expectations-just her, without any filters.
Ethan’s hand stilled almost imperceptibly.
“Then just keep being yourself when you’re with me.”
Jasmine couldn’t resist teasing him a little.
“So, Mr. Brooks… do you always be yourself?”

A shadow crossed Ethan’s face.
“I try to be.”
Jasmine immediately knew she’d overstepped.
From everything she’d seen, he always seemed to carry some quiet weight with him.
But what it was, she couldn’t tell.
On the surface, he was all calm and collected. But underneath?
“Ethan.”
He looked up.
“Yeah?”
“We’re friends now, right? So if someday-and I mean if-there’s something on your mind… You could tell
“I might not be much help, but it’s better than keeping it all in.”
Ethan held her gaze for a long moment.
“You think I’m unhappy?”
Jasmine scrambled for words that wouldn’t sound clumsy.
“Not unhappy, exactly… maybe I’m reading into things. It’s just… sometimes you seem like you’re carrying something heavy.”
Ethan looked down and stayed quiet.
Had she hit a nerve?
The air between them suddenly felt different.
Jasmine started to regret bringing it up at all.
Trying to lighten the mood, she added, “Ignore me-I’m probably just imagining things. I mean, look at you. You’ve got money, looks, influence… and on top of all that, a gorgeous fiancée from the perfect family. What could be weighing on you?”
Ethan still didn’t answer.
Jasmine bit down lightly on her plastic spoon, silently scolding herself.
What was wrong with her this morning?
Ethan set his spoon down and looked straight at her, his gaze suddenly intense.
