After all, this man was never going to be hers-not really, not in the way Jasmine sometimes let herself imagine.
Ethan checked carefully to make sure her hair was fully dry. “I am going to wash up. Get some rest. With that, he left.
Jasmine watched his retreating figure, caught between wanting to laugh and feeling genuinely moved. was plain to see that Ethan was trying hard to avoid any awkwardness.
But what about just now, blow-drying her hair for her? Was he not the least bit uncomfortable with that Or did he truly see her as nothing more than a pregnant subordinate who needed looking after?
She slid under the covers. Perhaps it was the sense of security she felt, but she drifted off without realizing
By the time Ethan came out, Jasmine was already sound asleep. He walked quietly over to her bed, tucked the blanket snugly around her, then returned to his own. Sleep didn’t come for him, though. He picked up his phone and typed a message to Zack.
“Got some things to handle here. Won’t be in the office for the next couple of days. Use your judgment on anything that comes up.”
Zack replied first with a wide-eyed emoji.
“Mr. Brooks… does this mean you’re with Ms. Thorne the whole time?”
Ethan replied, “Yes.”
Zack sent, “So you two are… like, sharing a room right now?”
Ethan glanced toward the other bed. “She’s asleep about ten feet from me.”
Zack read that and fumbled with his phone, mind racing. After a moment, he typed back determinedly.
“Whatever’s going on, I’ve got your back. And don’t worry-even if they waterboard me, I won’t say a
word.”
A faint smile touched Ethan’s lips.
“Landslide, heavy rain, every hotel booked. Only one room left. Luckily, it had two beds.”
Zack didn’t really care about the bed situation.
“Can I ask… what’s it like being in a room alone with your… um, with her?”
Ethan turned his head and looked at her, sound asleep, his expression filled with tenderness. Jasmine’s lips moved slightly, murmuring something. At first, he could not make it out. Then the word “Mom” slipped from her lips, and Ethan’s heart gave a sudden, quiet shudder.

He understood very well how deeply Jasmine longed for that word. He could only hope that one day, her wish would come true.
Another buzz from Zack pulled his attention back.
“Silas has been on a hiring spree ever since those lead engineers walked out. And he hasn’t stopped digging for Storm. At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before he figures out it’s Ms. Thorne.”
Ethan typed coolly, “Let him find out. It’s time he learned who’s been right under his nose.”
Zack replied, “He’s gonna lose it when he realizes.”
Ethan got up quietly, padded to the door, and stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door shut withour a sound. He lit up his phone screen again and scrolled to a number he had not been in touch with for a long time.
When the call connected, a languid voice came through the receiver. “A call from you at this hour makes me feel like I am being haunted, Ethan. How long has it been since you last reached out?”
Ethan kept his voice low. “I need a favor.”
“Of course you do,” the voice replied, now more awake and amused. “You only call when you want something. Alright, shoot.”
“Look into Sanoviv Sanatorium in Chestnut Grove. Check whether they have received any large private wire transfers in the past year.”
There was a pause on the other end. “Aren’t you in Rivercrest? Since when do you care about a care center all the way in Chestnut Grove?”
“I’ll fill you in later. Just dig into it for me. As soon as you can.”
“I’ll check after I wake up proper tomorr-”
“Now. Please.”
A soft, resigned laugh came through. “Must be important. Alright, boss. I’m getting up right now.”
When Jasmine woke, it was just past six in the morning. She turned over and found herself face-to-face with Ethan, who was still asleep. Her gaze rested on his face for several seconds. Then she came back to her senses and quickly turned away.
Her phone buzzed with a text. She hurried to mute it.
Ever since Arthur passed, Jasmine had carried a knot in her heart. She no longer dared to turn her phone off when she slept.
The message was from Sierra.
“You okay?”
