“And then you go and tell her that her mother passed away. Do you have any idea how much that hurt her?”
Serena fell silent, his expression turning sorrowful.
“I’m sorry.”
Jasmine’s mind was spinning.
Eleanor-of course it was Eleanor.
How did she even find out her mother was here?
And where had she taken her…
Was her mother still alive…
Jasmine couldn’t let herself follow that train of thought any further.
Right there in front of Serena, she pulled out her phone and called Eleanor.
“Eleanor, what did you do to my mother?”
Eleanor didn’t sound the least bit surprised. In fact, her tone was almost casual.
“Didn’t expect you to figure it out so quickly. Don’t worry, your mother’s alive and well. She’s not dead yet.”
Jasmine swallowed hard, forcing her racing heart to steady.
“Where is she?”
“If you want answers,” Eleanor replied coolly, “come to Grand Manor.”
Jasmine clenched her jaw.
“Fine.”
The car raced down the highway without a single stop.
But Jasmine wasn’t the one driving-Ethan was.
She sat in the passenger seat, her emotions too tangled to settle.
Her mother was alive.
Actually alive.
That alone felt like a small miracle.

After a stretch of silence, Ethan spoke up. “Eleanor’s probably using this as leverage-to negotiate something with you.”
Jasmine had already worked that much out before getting in the car. Then another memory surfaced, sending a chill through her.
“Ethan, I just remembered something.”
Ethan kept his eyes on the road ahead. “What is it?”
“Something Silas said when he came to see me that day.”
“Yeah?”
“He told me, ‘Maybe Dad got some kind of shock after he went back to his room. That could’ve triggered what happened to him.””
Jasmine’s thoughts began to sharpen.
“Back then, I was so overwhelmed by Dad’s death-all my grief just swallowed me up. I completely overlooked what Silas said.”
Looking back now, Silas’ explanation wasn’t entirely impossible.
And Jasmine knew Silas all too well.
The man was trash in plain sight.
Even when he messed up, he’d scramble for excuses to cover his tracks.
And if he couldn’t hide it, he’d shamelessly pin the blame on Jasmine, casting himself as the innocent one.
But that day… he’d sounded almost desperate to explain himself. That was new.
Maybe just maybe-her father’s death really had nothing to do with him…
“Ethan,” she said quietly, “I think I know what Eleanor’s trying to pull.”
They arrived at Grand Manor.
Ethan pulled over and parked.
“I can’t go in with you. Call me if anything happens-I’ll wait right here.”
Jasmine let out a faint sigh.
“Don’t worry. Eleanor isn’t going to kill me.”
She already knew exactly what Eleanor wanted.
Inside. Eleanor was lounging on the living room sofa, flipping through a fashion magazine filled with the

season’s latest styles-clothing, handbags, shoes, all sorts of jewelry.
That was Eleanor’s favorite pastime: either shopping or planning her next shopping spree. She never hesitated to spend.
When she noticed Jasmine, Eleanor lifted her gaze lazily and set the magazine aside.
“Wasn’t there a landslide over near Chestnut Grove? I didn’t think you’d make it back today.”
The jab didn’t faze Jasmine.
“Thanks to you, I’m pretty hard to get rid of.”
Eleanor let out a short, dry laugh.
“Even if you hadn’t come to me, I would’ve come to you.”
“Enough small talk,” Jasmine cut in. “Where’s my mother?”
Eleanor toyed with the diamond bracelet around her wrist.
“Are you blind? I’m your mother.”
Jasmine shot her a cold look.
“You?”
Eleanor didn’t rise to the bait.
“Fine, consider it me raising an ungrateful daughter. If you don’t want to acknowledge me, that’s your choice. Saves us both from pretending this is some sentimental family reunion.”
