Eleanor’s voice turned sharp. “What would you know? Without my family’s backing. Arthur would have been nobody!
“And then that coward goes behind my back-hiding your mother for over twenty years!
“He faked her death certificate and lied straight to my face for more than two decades.
“Thank God I found out. I would’ve been kept in the dark forever.”
Seeing Eleanor’s rage, Jasmine pressed further. “So it wasn’t really what Silas said that killed Dad, was it? You went to his room after he got back and fought about the will-that’s what really happened.”
“Yes!”
The room fell dead silent.
Eleanor froze, then exploded. “Jasmine! You set me up!”
A piercing ache spread through Jasmine’s chest.
“Dad would never have imagined the person who ended his life would be his own wife. Eleanor, how do you sleep at night in this house?”
After a brief panic, Eleanor slowly steadied herself.
That night haunted her dreams every time she remembered it.
Trying to make amends, she’d been visiting the family chapel daily, lighting candles and reciting prayers- anything to ease her guilt.
Now she looked drained, almost defeated.
“What if I told you I never meant for it to happen? Would you believe me?”
Jasmine stared back, expressionless, heart hollow with disappointment.
“Do you believe it yourself?”
Eleanor didn’t want to remember, but the words spilled out.
“That night started out fine. Then somehow we got onto the topic of your background.
“Your father said he wanted to tell you the truth-who you really were. He insisted we had to come clean.
“I got scared. We started yelling.
“Then he got deadly serious. Told me he’d already written a will. As… compensation, he left most of the
estate to you.

“When I heard that, I just lost it for a second-I slapped him. Who knew one slap would…?”
Jasmine listened, feeling as if her heart were being sliced apart.

She couldn’t begin to imagine the pain and despair her father must have felt in his final moments.
All these days, she’d hated him.
But now-she didn’t.
However things had gone, he’d been good to her. He’d raised her.
That kindness still mattered.
What Jasmine couldn’t understand was why luck always seemed to side with Eleanor.
Her father was gone. Her birth mother had spent over twenty years in a fog. And Jasmine herself had lived twenty-eight years trapped in a private hell.
Yet Eleanor-Eleanor got to stand here, proud and untouchable, looking down on the wreckage of Jasmine’s life.
They said karma always balanced the scales.
So where was the balance?
Jasmine took a slow, deep breath.
“You destroyed my mother’s life and killed my father-all for your own selfish reasons. Aren’t you afraid you’ll burn for this?”
Eleanor let out a dismissive snort.
“Burn where? That’s just a fairy tale people tell to make themselves feel better. And besides, how can you say I destroyed your mother or killed Arthur?
“Your mother was already depressed after your father disappeared and never came home. The difficult birth just made it worse. All I did was tell a few lies. How was I supposed to know she’d break?
“And Arthur-his health was already failing. What did that have to do with me? Why don’t you blame him for cheating on me and betraying me first?”
Jasmine was left speechless.
Now she understood what it truly meant to be slick-tongued and shameless.
In Eleanor’s world, there was no such thing as wrongdoing-only excuses.
A heavy, smothering frustration settled in Jasmine’s chest.
This house felt like it was squeezing the air from her lungs.

She just wanted out-as fast as possible.
“All you care about is the inheritance Dad left me. Fine. You can have it.”
Eleanor eyed her suspiciously.
“You can’t be serious. We’re talking about billions here. You’d just walk away from that?”
“It’s only money,” Jasmine said flatly. “If I want more, I can earn it.”
Eleanor stared as if she’d lost her mind.
