What she never realized was that the very person she had trusted like family-Serena-was the one who had pushed her straight into her enemy’s grasp.
Before leaving, Jasmine laid all the cash she had brought on the worn wooden table. She’d withdrawn t earlier just for this moment.
It totaled twenty thousand dollars.
That family had been paid to care for Anna, and even though they hadn’t gone beyond the basics, theyd made sure she was fed and clothed.
For that alone, Jasmine felt deeply grateful.
Jasmine sat in the back seat with Anna, keeping a careful distance so as not to startle her, just watching quietly.
Ethan started the engine, and the car rolled smoothly along the quiet country roads.
No one spoke the whole way, but the silence brought Jasmine a peace she’d never known before.
Maybe it was blood calling to blood-she had no doubt this woman, who remembered nothing, was her mother.
The shape of her eyes, the line of her nose, even the faint dimples on both cheeks… they mirrored Jasmine’s own.
This was the family she had waited twenty-eight years to find.
If only her father could have been here too… then everything would have been complete.
Back at the apartment, Jasmine told Margaret everything.
Tears welled in Margaret’s eyes as she listened; she wanted to take Anna’s hand but held back, afraid of frightening her.
“Jasmine,” Margaret said, her voice trembling with emotion, “let her stay in my room. She can sleep with me-that way if she needs anything during the night, I’ll be right there.”
The apartment only had two bedrooms, one for Jasmine and one for Margaret. With another person, it suddenly felt cramped.
“Margaret,” Jasmine said after a moment, “let’s move in a few days.”
“Move? Why would we move?”
“So Mom and you can live in a proper house.”
“A house? Where are we going to get a house?”

“Gracie Heights.”

Gracie Heights was the spacious four-bedroom condo-over two thousand square feet-that Arthur had quietly purchased in Jasmine’s name before he passed. Fully furnished and tucked away in the southern part of the city, Eleanor had never known it existed.
“But Jasmine,” Margaret hesitated, “aren’t you starting at Mr. Brooks’ company soon? If we move down south, your commute will be so much longer. It’s not as convenient as living here.”
Jasmine glanced at Anna and smiled softly.
“It’s just a longer drive. With a car, it’s still easy. Besides, Ethan recently bought land nearby to expand the R&D center. It’ll actually work out well.”
Margaret thought it over and nodded slowly.
“You’re right. And if we move, maybe that Vance guy won’t keep showing up at our door every other day.”
Jasmine couldn’t help but laugh. Margaret had gone from calling him “Mr. Vance” to “that Vance guy”.
It was then that they both remembered they had a guest.
Ethan had been standing quietly by the door all this time.
Jasmine turned to him with an apologetic smile.
“You didn’t say a word-I almost forgot you were still here.”
Ethan offered a slight smile in return.
“It’s late. You both should get some rest. I’ll head out.”
Jasmine walked him to the door.
“Ethan.”
He paused.
“Yeah?”
She hesitated briefly.
“These past few days… I’ve really put you through a lot. Thank you-for everything.”
Ethan didn’t reply. He just turned and walked away.
Jasmine watched him go, a strange warmth settling in her chest.
The way he treated her… It was starting to feel like more than she knew how to repay.
Near his own doorstep, Ethan came to a sudden stop.

He turned, and his voice cut cleanly through the dark.
“Come out.”
A figure emerged from the shadows.

It was Chloe, though she wasn’t her usual bright self tonight. Her steps were slow, her expression tight with bitterness.
She was the one who couldn’t seem to let Ethan go.
Ethan’s gaze darkened.
“You followed me?”
Chloe didn’t even flinch.
“Please. Don’t tell me you’re actually spending time with that woman. Do you like her or something?”
When he didn’t answer, her voice sharpened.
“No-I don’t believe you’d be into someone like her. Did she throw herself at you?”
Ethan’s brow furrowed slightly.
“We live in the same building. We ran into each other. That’s all there is to it.”
Chloe’s voice rose.
“Don’t lie to me. I saw you coming out of her place. Late at night, just the two of you-you expect me to believe nothing happened?”
His tone remained steady, cool.
