Several cigarette butts had already piled up in the ashtray on the table in front of him.

Vivienne reached over, took the cigarette from his lips, and handed him a glass of low-proof fruit wine
instead.
“You know, I actually kind of admire Ms. Thorne.”
Silas let out a scoff. “Admire her? Can’t you see she’s trying to pressure me? Basically blackmailing me into
a deal.”
Vivienne smiled lightly. “It is a form of pressure, sure. But have you stopped to think why she’s doing it? Why go this far, even knowing it might not look entirely proper?”
“She’s just bitter that Eleanor ended up with the company shares,” Silas replied flatly. “That’s all there is to it.”
Vivienne gave a faint, knowing smile. “She slept beside you for three years, and yet you still don’t understand her at all.”
“If she were truly just resentful and money-driven, why wouldn’t she demand you hand them over for free? Why offer to buy them from you?
“Right now, she holds plenty of leverage. She could easily push for much more. So why not ask for something outrageous, like getting the shares without paying a cent?”
Silas fell quiet for a beat. “What are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying she isn’t after the Thorne family fortune,” Vivienne explained calmly. “She’s repaying a debt of gratitude to Arthur.
“When Arthur was alive, he refused to sell the company to you because it was his life’s work-he couldn’t bear to let it go. She knows that. So even though Arthur’s gone now, she wants to protect that legacy for her father.
“The Thornes-mother and son-treated her terribly. She could’ve just washed her hands of all of it. But the first young lady understands the difference between kindness and grievance. She pays back what she owes. How many people do that, let alone women in her position?
“Silas, from the beginning till now, you’ve never really tried to see your wife for who she is. You’ve always looked at her through a biased lens.”
Silas didn’t respond for a long moment.
He had to admit, Vivienne’s last point hit home.
Over those three years, he truly never made the effort to really see her or understand where she was coming from.
“So you’re suggesting I agree to her terms?”

“You two shared three years-even short-term bonds deserve a little decency. If you’re going to split up, do it with grace. You’d just be helping her honor her father. It’s not like you’d lose anything meaningful.
“There are plenty of other companies besides Thorne Enterprises. It’s not like you absolutely need this one, right?”
Vivienne began gently massaging his shoulders, her expression serene and warm.
“Besides, if you handle it this way, someday in the future, if your paths cross again, she’ll remember you with respect. You won’t always have to be at each other’s throats.”
Silas stayed quiet a little longer, then suddenly took Vivienne’s wrist and pulled her onto his lap.
“You know, I’ve noticed you always seem to take her side.”
A soft smile touched Vivienne’s lips. “I’m just telling it like it is. It’s not about taking sides.”
“I thought you’d resent her.”
“Why would I resent her?”
Silas lifted her slender hand to his lips and brushed a kiss over her fingers. “What do you think?”
“You and I… we’re just close friends who understand each other,” Vivienne said softly. “I don’t need a title. I don’t ask for a piece of what’s yours. I only want us to have that understanding, so I can help carry your
worries.
“Beyond that, I’ve never asked for anything more. So why would I resent anyone?”
Something stirred lightly in Silas’ chest.
Vivienne let out a quiet laugh. “If you marry Ms. Sterling, then she’ll become the next Mrs. Vance. Would I have to resent her too?
“Why make things harder on myself? I know my place. All I can do is cherish what we have now.”
The man’s hand slid around her slender waist while the other cupped her chin, drawing her into a deep
kiss.
His eyes burned as he murmured against her lips, “You’re really something else. If only everyone could be like you.”
Soon, the two were sinking into the wide, plush couch, tangled together
Afterward, Silas’ mind felt clearer.
Better to earn someone’s gratitude than make an enemy.
It was just Thorne Enterprises. He could live without it.
Now it was just a question of whether that woman actually had the funds to buy the shares from him.
