Jasmine’s eyes welled up instantly. She turned her face away and fell silent.

Ethan watched the slight tremble in her shoulders, his chest tightening. He moved closer, voice soft.
“It’s gonna be okay…”
Jasmine’s reply was thick with unshed tears.
“Maybe this baby… just wasn’t meant to be mine.”
Ethan struggled for words.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Jasmine still had her back to him, but her breathing had steadied. Her tone, though, was distant.
“Was it Silas?”
“Probably not,” Ethan said.
“Then who?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Another heavy silence hung between them.
“Did he… did that man…” she couldn’t finish.
“No,” Ethan cut in gently. “He didn’t get the chance to hurt you.”
“No chance? Was it you? Did you save me?”
“It wasn’t me. It was Vivienne.”
Jasmine slowly turned back.
“Who?”
“Vivienne saw what was happening and texted me.”
Jasmine closed her eyes. A bitter, tired laugh escaped her.
“Never thought the day would come when Silas’ right-hand woman saves me. Life’s full of surprises, isn’t it?”
When she looked at him again, her gaze landed on the cut on his lower lip.
“What happened to your mouth?”

Chapter 179 Awkward Explanations
Ethan shifted uncomfortably and dodged the question.
“You hungry? Want me to grab you something?”
Jasmine didn’t let it go.
“Did someone hit you?”
Had he gotten hurt trying to protect her?

The usually composed man now looked oddly nervous-almost guilty-like a kid caught misbehaving
“Ethan?”
He cleared his throat. “It’s nothing.”
“You’re acting strange. You sure you’re okay?”
She reached out instinctively, her fingertips brushing his cheek.
“You feel warm. Do you have a fever?”
Ethan pulled back as if touched by a live wire, avoiding her hand.
Only he knew how those same hands had tormented him earlier in the car.
He had almost lost control.
Thank God he’d stopped himself in time.
If he hadn’t… taking advantage of her like that would’ve been unforgivable.
But the memory of their tangled breaths, the taste of her kiss-it clung to him, stubborn and vivid.
The images flooded back, and Ethan grew even more restless.
At least Jasmine didn’t remember what happened in the car.
If she had… he wasn’t sure their relationship would’ve survived it.
Luckily, a doctor walked in then, cutting through the tension.
Otherwise, Ethan had no idea how he would’ve answered her next questions.
The news from the doctor was a relief.
“Good news-the dosage was relatively low. All the prenatal markers look normal, so there shouldn’t be any impact on the baby.”
A weight lifted from Jasmine’s chest.

She thanked the doctor repeatedly.
The doctor glanced at Ethan with a hint of disapproval.

“I really don’t get you young folks sometimes. Do you always go this far? Earlier, we had a couple in here- the woman’s ovarian cyst ruptured from… well, let’s just say overly enthusiastic activity.
“And you two,” the doctor continued, shaking her head, “taking enhancers like that. Was the regular way not exciting enough?”
Ethan already felt awful about the whole situation.
When he’d rushed Jasmine in, his only focus was her safety-he hadn’t explained the details clearly.
Now, not only was there a misunderstanding, but the doctor had also spilled everything Ethan had tried to keep quiet.
He wished the floor would swallow him whole.
After the doctor left, Jasmine’s eyes drifted again to Ethan’s bruised lip.
She’d been with a man before. She understood now.
The room fell into a thick, uneasy quiet.
Ethan was on edge.
Jasmine felt even more awkward.
Some things were better left unknown.
Neither dared to look directly at the other.
Then Sierra and Caleb walked in, breaking the silence.
Sierra rushed to Jasmine’s side. “You scared me half to death! When Mr. Brooks texted Caleb, we were actually dealing with my parents across town. We drove straight over.”
Caleb’s expression was grim.
“Any leads on who did this?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Guy’s tough. Won’t talk. Keeps saying it was personal-that he just wanted to be
with her.”
Caleb swore under his breath.
“Using shit like that… when I find out who’s behind this, I’ll make sure they regret ever being born.”
Sierra added fiercely. “Trash like that doesn’t deserve to walk free.”
