Ethan nudged him toward the door. “You’ll have plenty of time to talk later. Just come keep me company for a cigarette.”

After they left, Sierra turned back to Jasmine. “Don’t you think Mr. Brooks seemed a little… off just now?”

Jasmine worked hard to keep her composure. “Not really. He seemed fine to me.”

“But I felt like he-”

“Hey, Sierra,” Jasmine cut in smoothly, “why don’t you fill me in on how the company’s doing lately?”

Sierra took the bait and launched eagerly into an update on the firm’s recent progress. Jasmine nodded along, but her thoughts were elsewhere.

Downstairs in the small courtyard garden, Caleb and Ethan stood smoking. Caleb took a long drag from his cigarette.

“So who do you think was behind it?”

Ethan’s voice was low. “The timing lines up with the divorce filing. My money’s on Madeline. Theodore probably had a hand in it, too.”

“How do you want to handle this?”

Alight rose in Ethan’s eyes that sent a chill down the spine. Caleb watched him for a moment, then slung an arm over his shoulder with a knowing half-smile.

“Back in the hospital room-I meant to ask you earlier. Something’s up with you, isn’t it?”

Ethan stared at the glowing tip of his cigarette, trying to shake the images from his mind. “You’re imagining things.”

Caleb clicked his tongue. “Ethan, after all these years as brothers, do you think I do not know you well enough? You just do not want to tell me. That cut on your lip, do not tell me you did that to yourself.”

Caleb quietly pushed down that small twinge of discomfort. “Did you two kiss?”

A long silence hung between them before Ethan finally replied, “Yeah.”

Caleb gave a bitter chuckle. “I knew it was only a matter of time…”

“It was not what either of us intended. She had been drugged.”

Caleb flicked ash from his cigarette, his expression turning somber. “So did you two…?”

“I held back.” The words came out quickly, as though he were eager to explain himself.

Hearing that. Caleb seemed to exhale a small, quiet breath of relief. But he was also impressed. “You actually held back.”

As a guy with normal urges, to pull back in a moment like that-when things were heating up-took serious willpower.

!

“Even if something had happened, it would’ve been understandable. Look at it this way-you’d have been helping her.”

Ethan let out a faint sigh. “It would have been help, yes, but also harm. It would have addressed her needs, yet left a shadow and wound on her mind for the rest of her life.”

Caleb smiled ruefully. “Still putting her first, huh?”

Some questions didn’t need to be asked anymore. The answers were already clear-they just weren’t saying them out loud. It was just that no one could pierce through that thin layer of paper. Once pierced, too many things would change beyond recognition. And some people would never be able to draw close again.

Caleb kept his arm around Ethan’s shoulder, wearing a faint, unreadable smile. “To be honest, if it were me, I definitely could not have held back.”

When it is someone you love, willpower collapses entirely. “Ethan, you are stronger than I am.”

And more considerate, too.

Two days later. Silas purchased the shares of Thorne Enterprises from Eleanor. Together with Jasmine’s gift agreement, Eleanor appeared to have come out the biggest winner of all.

Silas went straight to see Jasmine after signing the acquisition papers.

She was out on the balcony with Anna, soaking up the morning sun. Rather than inviting him inside. Jasmine met him at his car.

Silas didn’t waste words. “I will agree to sell the shares of Thorne Enterprises back to you. Once you have them, withdraw the divorce petition. We end things on good terms.”

“Fine,” Jasmine said evenly. “But to skip the 30-day waiting period, I want to file for divorce online. That way it’s over quickly.”

Silas frowned. “In such a hurry to end things? Can’t stand another day married to me?”

“Every extra day is pointless. We should just let each other go, move on, and live our lives.”

Now that she had her mother back, all Jasmine wanted was a quiet, steady life ahead.

Silas was quiet for a long moment. “You hate me, don’t you?”

Jasmine’s tone remained flat. “There’s no point in talking about that now.”
