Chapter 198 The Delayed Guest
Chapter 198 The Delayed Guest
Jasmine slipped off her coat and stepped into the kitchen. She glanced at the clock.
“Margaret, dinner isn’t for a while yet. Why are you starting so early?”
Margaret didn’t pause what she was doing for even a moment.
“There are so many dishes to prepare-I can’t possibly get them all done at once. I’ll cook them one by one, and by the time I finish, it should be just about right for dinner.”
Jasmine couldn’t help but chuckle. “I thought we agreed on a simple homemade meal. You’re making enough to feed an army. We’ll never finish all this.”
Margaret shook her head. “Now, you’re the one being difficult. It’s Mr. Brooks’ first time having dinner here -we can’t just throw together a few basic dishes. People might think we don’t know how to host.
“If we’re going to cook, we should do it right and prepare a full, proper dinner. That way, Mr. Brooks can eat well and leave satisfied.”
“Look at Mr. Brooks-he’s lost a bit of weight lately. Probably hasn’t been eating properly. So I really think we should make a little extra.”
Jasmine thought it over.
Lost weight? She hadn’t really noticed.
But if Margaret said so, then it must be true.
So she tied on an apron, rolled up her sleeves, and joined in.
After all, she’d promised to make Ethan a spiced apple oat cake herself.
By around six in the evening, the whole spread was ready.
Margaret was quite pleased with her work and looked forward happily to Ethan’s arrival.
But by seven o’clock, the man who’d promised to be on time still hadn’t shown up.
Margaret wasn’t upset-just genuinely concerned.
“Miss, maybe you should call Mr. Brooks and see if everything’s alright.”
Jasmine was just about to dial when her phone rang-it was Ethan.
“There’s been a multi-car pileup on the South Loop overpass. Traffic’s completely gridlocked. I’m not going to make it anytime soon. Please tell Margaret I’m sorry.”
Jasmine replied, “Margaret was worried about you. I was literally about to call when you rang. It’s fine- take your time, no need to rush. We’ll wait for you.”

Chapter 198 The Delayed Guest
Ethan insisted, “Don’t wait for me. You all go ahead and eat. Don’t stay hungry on my account.”
Jasmine said, “We can’t start without the guest. It’s okay-I’m not hungry anyway.”

Ethan’s voice softened. “Even if you’re not hungry, the baby might be. Be good and eat something. Just save me a plate.”
An hour later, the road finally cleared.
He drove straight over, arriving at Moonlight Terrace a full three hours later than promised.
Riding up in the elevator, Ethan hesitated.
Even as he stood outside the door, he debated whether to ring the bell or not.
They’re probably asleep by now.
He lingered for a few moments, then finally turned to leave.
But after just a few steps, he heard the door open behind him.
Ethan turned around.
There stood Jasmine in her slippers, calling out to him from the doorway.
“Ethan.”
He stopped. “How did you know I was out here?”
Jasmine smiled lightly. “I didn’t. I just had a feeling.”
Something warm tugged inside Ethan’s chest.
Jasmine asked, “If you were here, why didn’t you knock?”
Ethan returned her smile. “It’s late. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“You’re never a disturbance. Didn’t we agree to have dinner together?”
Ethan was taken aback. “You mean… you haven’t eaten yet?”

“No, we waited for you.”
Ethan felt a soft ache in his heart. His gaze dropped to her feet, bare except for the slippers, her heels exposed to the cool air of the hallway.
“Why aren’t you wearing socks?”
Jasmine looked down, then back up with an easy smile. “Got in a hurry and forgot. Come on inside- Margaret’s probably starving.”

Ethan followed her in.
Jasinine handed him a fresh pair of fleece-lined slippers.
“Wear these. The other ones were for summer-they’d be too cold now. I bought these today, brand new.”
Ethan put them on.
They fit perfectly-not too tight, not too loose.
Margaret greeted him warmly from the dining area. “Mr. Brooks, you made it! Come on in-I just warmed everything up.”
