Jasmine turned serious. “Caleb, stop talking like that. Have you forgotten he’s engaged?”
Caleb’s smile seemed a little strained. “I haven’t forgotten. I’m just worried someone else might have.”
Jasmine paused briefly. “I remember just fine.”
Caleb opened his mouth, then decided against saying what was on his mind.
What did it matter, anyway? Whether someone forgot or not-it wasn’t his business.
Not wanting to make things awkward, he shifted topics.
“Chloe was furious earlier, but she still didn’t mention Ethan’s name. Seems like…”
“She didn’t want to cause tension between Silas and Ethan,” Jasmine finished quietly.
After all, she had feelings for him.
“It’s more than just liking him,” Caleb remarked. “She’s probably in love with him. Otherwise, with her personality, she wouldn’t have held back.”
Too bad she was so overconfident.
On that front, the siblings were exactly alike.
“Now that this situation is handled,” Caleb asked. “What’s your plan?”
Jasmine offered a small smile. “Move to the new place. Then focus on preparing for the competition.”
“Let me know when you’re moving. We’ll come help.”
“Okay. I’ll have to trouble you all, then.”
Caleb raised an eyebrow. “Does ‘you all’ include Ethan?”
“Of course-if he’s free and willing.”
Caleb chuckled. “Just say the word, and he’ll be there even if the world’s ending.”
A ringing phone cut their conversation short.
The screen showed Eleanor.
Ever since Arthur passed, Jasmine had stopped calling her Mom.
Now it was just Eleanor-and whatever bond they once shared was gone for good.
Jasmine answered reluctantly. “What is it?”

“You bought the company shares from Silas?” Eleanor’s voice came through, sharp and direct.
“You hear things fast.”

“So that’s why you were rushing me to pay you back. You had this planned all along, Jasmine. All this time, this is what you were really after.”
“Think whatever you want. I don’t care.”
Eleanor went quiet for a moment.
“I heard you got cozy with some big investor. I didn’t know you had it in you. No hesitation at all.”
Jasmine fired back, “Not like you. You got rid of your own husband and threw your daughter out just to keep everything for yourself.”
Eleanor’s tone turned icy. “Don’t make it sound so ugly. It was mine to begin with.”
Jasmine gave a cold laugh. “Do you believe in karma?”
“I believe people chase money like birds chase food. If you don’t fight for what’s yours, you’re the one who loses.”
Jasmine sighed softly. “Not even pretending anymore, huh? Fine. That’s the Mrs. Thorne I know. Congratulations-you got exactly what you wanted.”
“Congratulations to you too,” Eleanor shot back. “You got Thorne Enterprises.”
As she spoke, Jasmine glanced out the car window.
Her eyes landed on Hugh.
“Pull over,” she told Caleb.
The car slowed and eased to the curb.
Across the street, two patrol cars were parked along the block.
Officers were loading a handful of street racers into the back seats.
Behind the patrol cars stood several high-end motorcycles-the kind only the wealthy or well-connected
could afford.
Caleb spotted Hugh, too, being guided into a police car.
He glanced at Jasmine with a knowing half-smile.
Eleanor’s impatient voice buzzed through the phone. “Hello? Did you suddenly go mute? Sounds like someone’s with you. Is it your new boyfriend?”
Jasmine narrowed her eyes slightly. “Where’s your son right now?”

“Why are you asking about Hugh?”
“He’s still my little brother. Can’t I show concern?”

Eleanor immediately turned defensive. “Jasmine, don’t you dare try anything with Hugh. He’s a good kid. Stay away from him.”
Jasmine’s lips curled faintly. “Some people call that ‘innocent’. Others call it ‘clueless.”
Eleanor was so angry she nearly hung up.
“Mrs. Thorne,” Jasmine said calmly, “since we were once family, let me offer you some friendly advice. No matter how much money you have, if you don’t manage it well, it’ll run out eventually.
“There’s a saying-shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations. I’m sure you’ve heard it.”
“What are you trying to say?” Eleanor snapped.
“I’m saying, don’t get so caught up in enjoying yourself that you forget to keep an eye on your son. One day he might wind up in jail and you won’t even see it coming.”
“Shut up! What’s wrong with you? Hugh is doing just fine. He’s a good boy. Stop talking nonsense-don’t you dare curse him. You’re out of your mind!”
Eleanor kept cursing a while longer before finally hanging up.
Across the street, the patrol cars had already pulled away.
Caleb shook his head lightly. “Spoiled rich kids really do go off the rails, huh. Not going to do anything about it?”
Jasmine leaned back and closed her eyes lazily. “Not my problem anymore.”
She wasn’t part of the Thorne family now.
When Jasmine got home, Margaret was already busy in the kitchen.
The counter was spread with fresh ingredients-looked like Margaret was planning to put on a real culinary show.
