The person in the bed would not stop having nightmares, kicking the covers off again and again,
Her arms flailed, as though she were desperately trying to fend something off.
The man keeping watch at her bedside had no choice but to get up repeatedly to pull the covers back over her.
This time, the person in the bed suddenly grabbed hold of his clothes.
She murmured something under her breath. “Mom, where are you going?” Ethan’s brow furrowed, a deep wave of tenderness flooding his heart.
He drew her hand down and enclosed it in his palm, then took off his shoes and lay sideways on the edge of the bed, gently patting her through the covers.
Slowly, the restless tension left her body.
Just sleep. You need the rest.
Sometime deep in the night, Jasmine woke.
The room around her was soft and cozy, straight out of a storybook, and the contrast with the crushing weight in her chest made it hard to breathe.
One by one, she remembered the people she’d lost.
Then she noticed the warmth around her hand-Ethan was holding it.
Ethan was half-sitting on the bed, leaning sideways against the headboard, asleep. He must have been exhausted.
A pang of guilt hit her. None of this is his problem, and yet here he is-again.
Jasmine, maybe Victoria is right. Maybe you really are bad luck. Everyone who gets close to you gets hurt.
With her free hand, she almost reached up to smooth the tired crease between his eyebrows.

But she stopped herself.
Then, as carefully as she could, she slid her other hand out of his grasp.
Even that slight movement stirred him.
Ethan opened his eyes, wincing as he straightened-his back and shoulders were stiff from staying in one position so long.
“You’re awake,” he said, his voice low and raspy from sleep. “Bad dream again?”
Jasmine tried to answer, but her throat felt raw.

Noticing, Ethan reached for the thermos he’d left on the nightstand.
“Here-honey water. Just a little sweet. It’ll help.”
She sat up and took a few small sips. The gentle sweetness soothed her throat.
“Thank you.”
Ethan tucked the blanket around her shoulders. “Try to sleep a little longer. It’s still early.”
Jasmine shook her head. “I don’t want to sleep. I can’t.”
“Are you feeling okay?” he asked, his tone softening with concern.
“I’m fine.”

She was quiet for a long moment. “Ethan, you should go get some real rest. There’s a guest room right next door. You look exhausted.”
“I’m not tired.”
“How can you not be?” She sighed. “You’re not made of steel.”
She could see the faint red in his eyes. He was worn out, and he still denied it.
“Ethan…”
“Yeah?”
“From now on… stay out of my troubles.”
He stilled. “Why would you say that? Did I do something wrong? Did I make you uncomfortable?”
Her heart ached. That was so like him-always turning the question back on himself, always worried he’d overstepped.
The tears she’d been holding back threatened to spill.
“No,” she whispered. “It’s not you. I just…I don’t want to drag you down with me.”
“Drag me down how?”
“Look…” Jasmine took a shaky breath. Everything hurt. “My foster dad-he died because of me. My birth mom-that happened because of me, too. Everyone who stays close…” She swallowed. “Victoria always said I was a curse.”
A gentle finger came to rest against her lips.
“Shhh. Listen to me.” His voice was calm and clear, like something solid in a spinning world. “There’s no such thing as a curse. You’re an educated woman with a sharp mind. Don’t let the words of someone who doesn’t know any better get inside your head.
