Chapter 209 Suspicions

“Where’s my brother? Why isn’t he here?”

The lawyer explained, “Mr. Vance left the city on business early this morning. He’s likely to be gone for the next couple of days.”

Chloe stamped her foot in frustration.

“I’m dealing with all this and he still won’t come back?”

“Don’t worry, Ms. Vance,” the lawyer reassured her. “Nothing’s going to happen to you. This situation doesn’t involve you directly. I’ll handle everything and have you out of here soon.”

Only then did Chloe seem to relax. She shot a sideways glance at Jasmine before sticking close to the lawyer’s side.

Jasmine moved to follow, but Ethan gently held her back, giving a slight shake of his head.

The statements were taken quickly.

The young man who had been behind the wheel was charged with causing a fatal traffic accident. Sentencing and restitution would be determined later in court.

For Jasmine, compensation wasn’t the point.

What she wanted was the truth.

And her gut was telling her that the story they’d been given was too neat-too clean.

She stood outside the police station, watching as Chloe emerged with her lawyer.

As she passed Ethan, Chloe paused. Her gaze was still lingering, almost dreamy.

“Ethan…”

He didn’t even look her way.

By now, Chloe seemed accustomed to his coldness.

“I’ll wait for you. I know one day you’ll feel the same way about me.”

Caleb stepped between them, blocking her earnest stare.

“You should go now, Ms. Vance. The longer you stay, the harder it gets to keep your story straight.”

Chloe opened her mouth to retort, but her lawyer gently pulled her back.

“Watch your tone,” the lawyer warned Caleb. “That sounded like a threat toward my client.”

Caleb slid his hands into his pockets and looked the lawyer over.

“A threat? Pal, not many people try to threaten me. You’ve got guts. I’ll give you that.”

The lawyer seemed to sense he wasn’t dealing with an easy mark and let it drop.

“Goodbye.”

Sierra stepped closer to Jasmine.

“Do you really think there’s more to this?”

Jasmine just felt a chill settle deep in her bones.

“My instincts…”

Caleb thought it over for a long moment.

“The way Chloe acted when she saw us-nervous, trying too hard to play it cool-it doesn’t sit right. Something’s off.”

Sierra nodded slowly. “So maybe she was the one driving, and that kid’s just taking the fall for her?”

“Very possible,” Caleb agreed.

“But without proof,” Sierra added, “it’s all just guesswork.”

For a while, the group stood in uneasy silence.

Then Ethan, who had been quiet all along, spoke softly but firmly.

“I’ll look into it.”

Jasmine returned home.

Margaret had already packed her bags.

The moment she saw Jasmine, Margaret dropped to her knees with a heavy thud.

Jasmine let out a weary sigh and knelt down beside her.

“Margaret, please don’t blame yourself like this. I don’t hold you responsible.

Tears streamed down Margaret’s face.

“What terrible thing have I done? How could I bring such tragedy into this house? Your mother was finally going to have some peace… and then I…

“Jasmine, you never should have brought me here. If I hadn’t come, she’d still be alive.”

There it was. That’s the difference between people.

Chapter 209 Suspicions

Good people carry the weight, always wondering if they could have done more.

Heartless people find excuses, twist the truth, and lie like it’s nothing.

“Margaret, I don’t blame you. Really.”

Jasmine spoke as if each word drained the last of her strength.

“If anyone’s to blame, it’s me. I never should have left the two of you here alone. I should have taken you with me.”

“Jasmine, I’m too ashamed to stay,” Margaret whispered. “I need to go.”
