Chapter 226 The Unexpected Visit

Chapter 226 The Unexpected Visit

Jasmine couldn’t bring herself to accept it.

“Joanne, this is far too generous. I really shouldn’t take it.”

Joanne put on a mock-stern look.

“Nonsense-you absolutely must! You’re like a daughter to us now. It’s only right for parents to give their daughter something special.”

Jasmine felt genuinely torn.

“I’m serious, Joanne. This is just too much…”

“Take it,” Richard chimed in calmly. “Joanne doesn’t take to many people this easily. Call it fate if you will If you refuse, you’ll only upset her.”

Jasmine was stuck between a rock and a hard place. What was she supposed to do?

Ethan stepped in. He picked up the velvet case, opened it, and lifted out the bracelet.

“How about we try it on?”

Before Jasmine could react, he’d already taken her hand and slid the bracelet onto her wrist.

The cool, translucent gem made her fair, slender wrist seem even softer and more delicate.

Ethan’s eyes softened just a fraction.

“It suits you.”

Joanne beamed. “It really does look lovely on you, sweetheart. Don’t overthink it-just treat it as a simple

welcome gift.”

A simple gift worth 500 thousand dollars?

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Joanne rose cheerfully to answer it, but Richard stopped her abruptly.

“Wait-I completely forgot. Silas is stopping by.”

Joanne looked surprised. “Silas? You mean Jasmine’s ex-husband?”

“That’s the one.”

“What’s he doing here?”

“Madeline had some premium liquor sent over. I tried to decline, but she insisted her grandson deliver it personally.”

After everything she’d heard about how the Vance family had treated Jasmine, Joanne wasn’t exactly eager to see any of them.

“Just send him away. Jasmine’s here with us, and I really don’t want her to feel uncomfortable.”

Jasmine leaned closer to Ethan and whispered, “That ‘everything she’d heard-was that you?”

Ethan kept his tone even. “Mostly, yes.”

Earlier, when Ethan mentioned Jasmine was visiting, Joanne had asked a few careful questions. Ethan Had answered selectively, so Joanne had a rough idea of what Jasmine had endured in her marriage.

Richard sighed. “He’s already at the door. It wouldn’t be polite to turn him away now. Let him in.”

“But what about Jasmine?” Joanne pressed.

Richard glanced toward Ethan. “It’s not Jasmine we need to worry about-it’s Ethan being seen here.”

Joanne looked confused. “What does Ethan have to do with this?”

“I’ll explain later,” Richard said quietly. “Ethan, why don’t you wait in the bedroom for a moment? Jasmine, you stay here with us.”

Ethan gave a slight nod and slipped into the adjoining room.

Richard then turned to Jasmine with a gentle smile. “Since Joanne already gave you a welcome gift, I can’t fall behind as your godfather. Consider this my gift to you today.”

He then gestured toward the entryway. “Honey, could you get the door, please?”

The door opened to reveal Silas.

Richard stood to greet him warmly. “I told your grandmother not to trouble herself, but here you are. I really appreciate it.”

Silas stood tall in a long black wool coat, looking every bit the poised, handsome young professional- though his smile seemed a little tight around the edges.

“Mr. Crawford, it’s no trouble at all. Grandma really wanted you to try this liquor. You know what they say -good things are meant to be shared.”

“Please, come in and have a seat.”

Silas stepped into the living room-and froze when he spotted a familiar figure standing calmly nearby. For a second, he wondered if he was seeing things.

“What are you doing here?” he blurted out before he could stop himself.

Jasmine didn’t answer. She had a feeling she already knew what Richard’s “gift” was going to be.

Sure enough, Richard spoke up smoothly on her behalf. “We invited Jasmine over for dinner.”
