“The people of Rivercrest will certainly welcome Mr. Grant’s contribution to the GDP,” Jasmine replied.
“I don’t care about other people,” Caleb said. “I want to know if my Jasmine welcomes me.”
Sierra gave Caleb a sharp kick. “Move over.”
She wedged herself between the two of them.
“Caleb Grant, you want to die? Jasmine is a married woman. Put away the playboy act before I have you neutered.”
“Tsk.” Caleb laughed instead of getting angry. “My flirting doesn’t stop me from being devoted to Jasmine. Besides, so what if she’s married? She’ll always have a place in my heart.”
Jasmine frowned and spoke in a serious tone.
“Caleb, that’s enough.”
Caleb froze for a second. “Can’t take a joke? How boring.”
“Jasmine is the only one who can keep you in line,” Sierra added.
Caleb was the one who had co-founded a startup with Jasmine in college.
He was a year ahead of her, her senior.
He perfectly fit the image of a spoiled, reckless rich kid.
But Jasmine and Sierra knew better.
It was all an act. Caleb played the part of the rebel to hide his true self.
In reality, he was a brilliant investor.
He had a deep understanding of the tech industry and had successfully invested in several major internet companies.
Jasmine’s first success was due in no small part to Caleb’s support.

She truly respected him.
But he was also a massive headache.

Years ago, after seeing Jasmine’s true talent, Caleb had declared his intention to marry her.
He claimed a man should only marry a woman who possessed both beauty and brains.
Everyone took it as a joke from a playboy.
No one expected Caleb to actually propose in front of everyone on graduation day, getting down on one knee.
He’d terrified Jasmine.
Once she calmed down, she had rejected him without a shred of mercy.
For years, the story of Caleb’s failed proposal was the talk of the town.
Jasmine had spent a long time avoiding him.
Luckily, Caleb eventually moved to Portshire to invest in projects, and the whole thing slowly faded away.
Seeing him again was undeniably awkward.
But then she realized they weren’t impulsive kids anymore. The past was ancient history; being dramatic about it was just immature.
So she decided to treat Caleb like an old friend she hadn’t seen in a while.
Once everyone arrived, the atmosphere grew lively.
Old friends reuniting inevitably led to drinking games.
Jasmine figured since she was terminating the pregnancy anyway, it didn’t matter if she had a drink.
But Caleb snatched her glass away and drank it for her every time. After several rounds, Caleb was clearly starting to feel the alcohol.
By the time the reunion ended, he didn’t know which way was up. “What do we do?” Sierra asked. “Just dump him on the sidewalk?”

Jasmine still had a conscience. “He drank all that for me.”
“Take him to a hotel?”
Just as Jasmine was about to respond, a familiar car pulled up to the curb.
The door opened, and Silas Vance stepped out.
Sierra let out a burp. “What’s he doing here?”
Jasmine finally remembered.
Earlier that evening, Silas had texted her asking for the name of the hotel.
She’d sent it back without thinking.
She hadn’t actually expected him to show up.
As Silas approached, Caleb suddenly threw his arms around Jasmine.
“Jasmine… it’s really been too long.”
Jasmine struggled to push him away, but he held on tight.
At the same time, she saw Silas’s face turn a sickly shade of green.
He lunged forward and tore Caleb away from her.
Caleb stumbled and nearly fell, only saved by Sierra catching him.
Before Sierra could even say a word, Silas was already dragging Jasmine toward his car.

In her heels, Jasmine nearly twisted her ankle, but she managed to signal to Sierra that she’d call her later.
The car flew across the overpass, well above the speed limit.
Silas’s expression was terrifying.
Jasmine gripped the handle tight and remained silent.
Speaking now would only provoke him further. Driving like this was a recipe for a double funeral.
Actually, a triple funeral.

Silas could die for all she cared, but Jasmine wanted to live.
The car eventually screeched to a halt in front of the villa.
Jasmine used the moment to quickly type out a text.
The message was just two words: Kingsley Bay.
The second she sent it, she deleted it before Silas could snatch her phone.

Silas searched but found nothing. He glared at her. “Back at home and still can’t let go?”
Jasmine explained calmly, “Caleb Grant was my senior in college. We worked together back then, so we’re close. He just had too much to drink today.”
“Caleb Grant?” Silas froze.
The legendary investor, Caleb Grant?
