Arthur frowned, clearly uneasy. “Traveling alone in the middle of the night isn’t safe. Cancel the ticket. just wait until I’m through with this busy streak at work, and we can go on a trip together. You’ve grown up so fast, and I realized I’ve never actually taken you on a vacation.”

A sudden wave of tears threatened to spill over. Jasmine wondered if it was because of the pregnancy: she seemed to be getting more emotional by the day.

Telling another lie, she said, “Don’t worry, Dad. A college friend of mine lives out there. She’s going to meet me and keep me company.”

“Oh, I see,” Arthur said, relaxing slightly.

Jasmine kept the forced smile on her face. “See, Dad? I’m not a kid anymore. Plus, it’s not even that far. There’s really nothing to worry about.”

“It doesn’t matter how old you get, you’ll always be my daughter. How could I not worry?”

Jasmine couldn’t bring herself to keep talking. Even though they were white lies meant to protect him, keeping up the facade was exhausting. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug.

“I have to go, Dad. Take good care of yourself, and call me if you need anything.”

When she reached the car door, she couldn’t help but look back. Arthur was still standing in the exact same spot, watching her with a gaze full of fatherly affection. A bitter pang hit Jasmine’s heart, and she fought back the urge to cry.

“Dad.”

Arthur took a couple of steps toward her. “Yes, sweetheart?”

Jasmine took a deep, steadying breath. “I don’t want a single penny of the Thorne family inheritance. Just leave it all to Hugh. Please don’t argue with Mom over this anymore.”

As the car drove away, a hollow ache settled into Arthur’s chest, leaving his heart heavy and raw.

When he walked back into the house, Hugh called out to him, but Arthur didn’t seem to hear.

Eleanor grabbed Arthur by the arm. “Your son is greeting you! Did you lose your hearing?”

Arthur flung her hand off, his eyes flashing with icy anger. “Can you just give me some peace and quiet!”

Eleanor shrank back, startled by the sheer, chilling coldness in his gaze. Her grip loosened instinctively.

Once Arthur was well out of earshot, Eleanor gritted her teeth in frustration. “That wretched girl. Every single time she comes back, she throws this entire house into chaos. What did she even come here for anyway!”

On her way there, Caleb called.

Chapter 52 Getting More Emotional

Jasmine took a moment to compose herself before answering.

“Where are you?” Caleb asked. “Everyone’s already here, we’re just waiting on you!”

“I’m on my way,” Jasmine replied. “I should be there in about half an hour.”

“Jasmine, if you dare flake on me, you’re dead to me!”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

Half an hour later, her car pulled up to Celestial Garden. The restaurant looked like a palace: getting a reservation here was notoriously difficult, even if you booked days in advance. Rumor had it that the head chef’s ancestors used to cook for the imperial family.

Just as Jasmine finished parking, her phone chimed with a notification. She tapped it open and saw that hundred thousand dollars had been deposited into her bank account.

Right after came an apologetic text from Arthur.

[Jasmine, take this money. Make sure you eat well and take care of yourself while you’re away. I’m sorry I’m so useless and can’t give you more right now. But don’t worry, once the company gets back on track. I will give you a proper windfall.]

Jasmine knew the real reason her father was short on cash had nothing to do with the company. It was because Eleanor had seized complete control of the family finances, specifically to stop Arthur from helping Jasmine.

Not wanting to call him out on it, Jasmine just replied: [Thanks, Dad. This is more than enough.]

Locking her phone, Jasmine walked inside and gave the host Caleb’s name. A server warmly escorted her to the largest private dining room.

As the door swung open, a dozen pairs of eyes instantly turned toward her.

“Well, well, look who finally decided to grace us with her presence,” Caleb boomed, his voice full of playtul teasing. “Any later and I would’ve come looking for you myself.”

Sierra hurried over and took Jasmine by the hand. “Come on, we saved a seat for you.” She pulled Jasmine toward the empty chair, which was directly to Caleb’s left.

But when Jasmine saw who was sitting to his right, she froze.

Ethan.

What was he doing here?

Caleb’s eyes darted between them as he introduced him. “This is Ethan, a good buddy of mine.”

Ethan gave Jasmine a polite nod. Jasmine nodded back, her gaze lingering on him for an extra second. In a moment of mutual understanding, neither of them let on that they already knew each other. After all, the fewer people who knew about what they were currently working on, the better.
