Chapter 51 Too Highly. Too Lightly

Chapter 51 Too Highly, Too Lightly

But it was nothing more than a pipe dream.

“I am in a rush. I will see myself out.” Without a backward glance, she turned and left.

“Mom, what are you looking at?”

Hugh’s sudden appearance from behind gave Eleanor a nasty fright.

“You brat, you scared the life out of me!”

Hugh threw an arm around her shoulders. “Mom, have you noticed? My sister just keeps getting prettier and more captivating.”

Without giving it much thought, Eleanor agreed. “That’s true enough. It looks like her years with the Vance family haven’t treated her too badly.”

Hugh smiled meaningfully. “I doubt the Vances have anything to do with it. My sister just has good genes. Her biological parents were definitely no ordinary people.”

At those words, Eleanor’s face darkened.

“Hugh, why bring that up out of nowhere? Are you really that bored?”

“Just making conversation,” Hugh said. “What are you getting so worked up about?”

“Don’t ever let me hear you say that again,” Eleanor warned.

“Fine, if you say so, I won’t,” Hugh said, transitioning into a coaxing smile. “But Mom, I dated a few girls while I was abroad, and honestly, none of them were much to look at. Compared to Jasmine, they’re like night and day. Why don’t you just have Jasmine divorce Silas and marry me instead?”

Eleanor’s heart skipped a beat in sheer panic. “Hugh! She is your sister!”

Hugh shrugged. “We don’t share a single drop of blood. You basically picked out a wife for me back then.”

“Not another word!” Eleanor snapped, losing her temper with her son for once. “You mark my words. Blood or no blood, she is your sister. In every sense that matters, the two of you are siblings. If you ever let your mind wander down that path again, do not expect me to acknowledge you as my son.”

Eleanor intentionally spoke with harsh finality. She absolutely refused to let anything so disgusting happen.

“I will not leave you a single penny of the Thorne family fortune. Then we will see what you have left to squander!”

Terrified by the threat, Hugh immediately backed down.

“Oh, come on, my dear mother, I was only joking. Why do you have to take everything so seriously?”

Still shaken, Eleanor said, “Don’t you ever make that joke again.”

“I know, I know. I was just talking nonsense, just playing around,” Hugh said.

Only then did Eleanor finally relax.

“Hugh, the fact that you even call her your sister is doing her a favor. Think about her background versus yours. Is she even in your league?”

For a split second, a complex expression flashed across the twenty-four-year-old’s face-one that carried a depth far beyond his years.

“Mom,” Hugh said, “you think too highly of me, and you vastly underestimate her.”

Eleanor completely brushed the comment aside, focusing instead on what mattered most to her.

“I did not bring you back home just for you to idle your days away. I need you to share some of the burden with your father. Use this opportunity to learn how to run a company of this scale, so that when the time comes, I can hand everything over to you without worry.”

Hugh looked entirely indifferent. “We’ll talk about that later. Let me get adjusted to life back home first.”

Eleanor poked him in the forehead. “You really are a piece of work!”

She couldn’t hit him, she couldn’t scold him, and at the end of the day, she still had to dote on him.

Jasmine had just loaded her luggage into the car when Arthur’s vehicle pulled into the driveway.

Seeing his daughter, Arthur scrambled out of the car.

“Jasmine! Look who’s here!”

Jasmine could hear it clearly: Arthur’s words came from a place of genuine joy. The exact same question from Eleanor, not long before, had been laced with nothing but indifference.

Jasmine offered him the same explanation she had given her mother. “I was just passing by and thought I’d drop in.”

Arthur took her hand. “Then why are you leaving so soon? Come on, let’s go inside. It’s been too long since we’ve had a proper catch-up.”

With the company’s biggest crisis finally resolved, Arthur was already in high spirits. Seeing his daughter completely unexpectedly made his day.

“I’ll have the kitchen whip up your favorite dishes tonight,” Arthur beamed. “You love my homemade shrimp, right? I’ll make a massive platter of it today, and you can eat to your heart’s content!”

Arthur did not bring up Hugh at all. He only talked about what she loved to eat. It was enough to thaw, just a little, the chill that had settled in Jasmine’s heart.

“Dad.” Jasmine said, pulling his coat tighter around him. “The weather’s getting cold. You need to bundle
