She really had lost spectacularly. But at least she was clear-headed enough to know when to call it quits.
“That’s just how men are,” Sierra continued. “If it comes easily, they never appreciate it. But if it’s just out of reach, they’ll bend over backward for it.” Sierra couldn’t help but glance over at Ethan. “Though, locking at Mr. Brooks, he doesn’t seem like that type. He actually seems different.”
“Interested?” Jasmine teased.
“Hey, if you don’t want him, I’ll gladly take him off your hands,” Sierra joked back.
“He has a fiancée, remember?”
“Well, engagements get broken all the time.”
Jasmine couldn’t help but laugh. “Can you wish something good on people for once?”
“You never know.”
Suddenly, Caleb spun around and pointed a finger at Jasmine. “You! You need to apologize to me right now! You’re the reason I’ve been the laughingstock of this group for years.”
Jasmine knew he was drunk, so she didn’t take it to heart. He had always been this way-completely blunt and unfiltered. It was honestly refreshing compared to people who hid their true intentions and played mind games.
And the respect that came with the title “Mr. Grant” was something he had earned entirely on his own. without any help from his parents. Whether he had a terrible relationship with them or didn’t have parents at all, Caleb never mentioned his family to anyone. Jasmine vividly remembered someone casually asking about his parents back in the day, and his face had instantly dropped. Since then, she knew it was a sore spot for him, a painful topic that was strictly off-limits, So, she never asked.
Seeing Jasmine remain silent, Caleb muttered, “Apologize to me.”
Sierra rolled her eyes. “Caleb, don’t make me beat you up at your own birthday party.”
“You always have to chime in, don’t you?” Caleb said. “One of these days, I’m going to teach you a lesson.”
“Oh, try me. If you back down, you’re a chicken.”
Caleb rubbed his hands together. “Oh ho, underestimating me, are we?”
Sierra rolled up her sleeves. “Come on then. Let’s go.”
Jasmine didn’t bother stepping in. The two of them had always bickered like this, and it was comforting to see that some things never changed, even after all these years. Some dynamics were just hardwired. Besides, Jasmine wasn’t worried about Sierra losing at all-Sierra was a high-level black belt in taekwondo.
But when Jasmine turned around to look, the two of them had huddled together and were intensely playing rock-paper-scissors.

Caleb slid right into Jasmine’s seat, bumping her over to the side. Losing her balance, she stumbled back a step, but Ethan caught her from behind and held her steady.
“Thanks.” Jasmine said.
“Something on your mind?” Ethan asked, his voice gentle.
Jasmine couldn’t quite hide her exhaustion. “It’s just been one of those days. I’ve been trying to force myself to snap out of it, but it’s proving a little hard.”
Instead of prying, Ethan simply asked, “How are you feeling physically?”
Jasmine knew exactly what he was really asking about. She instinctively touched her stomach. “Physically I’m doing fine.”
The pregnancy symptoms were becoming quite noticeable, though. That was why she had been doing her best to steer clear of anyone from the Vance family, terrified they would notice something was off. But it felt like the harder she tried to avoid them, the more she ran into them. Fortunately, she had managed to fly under the radar so far.
“Want to go sit on the couch for a bit?” Ethan suggested. “We can talk.”
Jasmine glanced around the table. Everyone seemed completely wrapped up in their own conversations. “Sure,” she nodded.
As soon as they sat down, a server brought over a glass of orange juice that Ethan had ordered for her. Jasmine held the glass, her spirits still low.
“I personally interviewed those people you recommended,” Ethan noted.
Jasmine forced herself to focus. “I know. They called me about it. I told them there’s nothing wrong with moving on to bigger and better opportunities.”
Ethan smiled. “As things stand, Silas’s company, Nexora Tech, is still a step ahead of us at Zenith Tech.”
Jasmine let out a dismissive scoff. “Silas has a knack for management, sure, but tech isn’t his strong suit. If his R&D team hadn’t pulled all those all-nighters over the last few years to get those Al systems out to market, Nexora would probably still be the same obscure little tech company it was years ago.”
“I imagine you deserve half the credit for that,” Ethan said.
Jasmine offered a bitter smile.
She had genuinely believed that by protecting what Silas cared about, she could keep him. And while she had kept him around, she had never actually won his heart.
“What’s your next move?” Ethan asked.
Jasmine glanced over at Sierra and went quiet.
Misinterpreting her silence, Ethan apologized. “Sorry, I’m asking too many questions.”
