With that, she turned to go, but halfway to the door, she remembered something and spun back around. “Give me your contact info so I can reach you whenever I want.”
“Zack,” Ethan called out.
Zack stepped forward and handed her one of Ethan’s business cards, which Chloe tucked into her bag like a prized treasure.
Once she finally left, a sudden quiet fell over the room. Zack let out a massive sigh of relief and quickly shut the door.
“Mr. Brooks, are you seriously going to her party?” Zack asked.
Instead of answering, Ethan walked straight to the wardrobe, opened the door, and reached his hand inside. “Come on out. It’s too stuffy in there.”
Jasmine’s legs had gone completely numb. She placed her hand in Ethan’s palm and used his grip to pull herself out. But the moment her feet touched the floor, her knees buckled, and she started falling.
Ethan’s quick reflexes kicked in, and he caught her. Instantly acting on instinct, Jasmine wrapped her arms tightly around his waist to steady herself. For a fleeting second, they were frozen in an incredibly intimate embrace.
Zack blinked at the sight, momentarily struck by a strange illusion. For a split second, it felt as though Jasmine was the one who was Ethan’s fiancée.
They just looked so perfect together.
Realizing how inappropriate the position was, Jasmine immediately pulled out of Ethan’s arms. “I’m so sorry. My legs went completely numb.”
Ethan looked deeply concerned. “The air is pretty thin in there. Are you okay?”
It took Jasmine a few seconds to realize what he was really asking about. “I’m fine, really. Don’t worry about
it.”
He truly did look worried about her.
“That’s good,” Ethan replied.
“You only told her you’d go to the party to bail me out, didn’t you?” Jasmine asked.
“It was a split-second decision.”
“Are you actually going to go?”
“I said I’d try.”
Zack chimed in with a teasing grin. “Mr. Brooks, it looks like you’re willing to sacrifice your own virtue for

Ms. Thorne.”
Jasmine wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t quite bring herself to. “I was too careless in there,” she said, looking down. “I dragged you into this.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Ethan said gently. “If anyone is to blame, it’s me. I should have chosen more secure place for us to meet. I’ll make sure it’s better next time.”
Hearing that, Jasmine was left speechless.
It was one thing for someone to admit when they were wrong, but having someone take the blame so readily when they hadn’t done anything wrong only made her feel more guilty.
Jasmine shifted the conversation. “Sierra left her last company, and I recommended your firm to her.”
“I saw her application,” Ethan replied.
“She’s a rare talent,” Jasmine said. “I wanted to recommend her to you before, but she was employed at the time, so I didn’t bring it up. This worked out perfectly. Though she did mention she wants to get through your interview process on her own merit rather than just being dropped into a position.”
“That’s not a problem.”
Jasmine looked into his deep, expressive eyes and felt herself drift for a moment. To think, he was the legendary “King”-the very master she had been dying to meet.
“There’s something else. I…” Jasmine hesitated, unsure whether to go on.
She was deeply worried about her inability to find Margaret.
Maybe actively asking for help would finally give her a lead. As of right now, Ethan was the best person to ask. Still, she felt guilty about constantly imposing on him.
While she sat there, tearing herself apart with indecision, Ethan saw right through her.
“Since we’re already friends, there’s no need to stand on ceremony,” he said. “If you need something, just say the word.”
It sounded a bit formal, but there was no mistaking his sincerity.
His words gave Jasmine the push she needed, and the request tumbled out. “I want to ask for your help in finding someone.”
“Finding someone?” Ethan asked.
“Yes. She’s a maid from the Vance household named Margaret. Her full name is Margaret Gable.”
Though Ethan didn’t press for details, Jasmine offered an explanation anyway.
“Margaret was fired from the Vance estate because of me,” Jasmine said, her voice laced with guilt. “I dragged her into my mess. She’s getting up there in years, and her family’s financial situation isn’t great.
