Chapter 87 The Milk Had Expired

Jasmine pulled out a chair at the dining table and sat down. “I’m sorry.”

Busy with his hands, Ethan didn’t turn around. “You came all the way over here first thing in the morning just to apologize?”

“I’m the reason you got sick,” Jasmine said. “I didn’t realize the milk had expired.”

“Did Caleb tell you?”

“Yeah.”

“Back in college, there was a period where I ate completely irregular hours and constantly stayed up late Over time, it ruined my stomach. So it wasn’t the milk’s fault-it’s just my own health issues.”

Jasmine looked at him, surprised.

Someone born into wealth like Ethan could have easily just coasted through life. It was one thing that he chose to work hard, but skipping meals and pulling all-nighters seemed extreme for someone in his position.

Sensing her confusion, Ethan explained. “I’ve never really liked being labeled a trust-fund kid. Whatever achievements I have, I want them to be earned through my own abilities. Though I can’t deny that my background gave me a massive head start over others. Back in college, I was desperate to prove my worth, so I poured everything into developing quadrupedal and humanoid robots. I was so consumed by it that I barely ate or slept.”

Jasmine sat frozen for a moment as she did the math in her head.

Ethan was two years older than her, which meant…

“Wait,” Jasmine gasped. “The humanoid robots that debuted at the Super Bowl halftime show and the Winter Olympics that year… you developed those?”

“To be exact, my team and I did,” Ethan corrected mildly.

Jasmine was utterly speechless.

It really goes to show that there is always someone more remarkable out there.

Twenty minutes later, a steaming hot breakfast was served.

It was just fresh milk and freshly made egg pancakes. Nothing fancy, but the savory aroma of the pancakes immediately made Jasmine’s stomach growl.

“Breakfast is usually pretty simple when it’s just me,” Ethan said.

Jasmine found herself shifting closer to the table. “You… made these egg pancakes yourself?”

Ethan untied his apron. “Why don’t you try one?”

Unable to resist, Jasmine took a bite. It was delicious-honestly, better than the ones from the street vendors outside.

After finishing the piece, she looked up. “Can we talk?”

She wasn’t stupid. Now that she had finally pieced everything together, she knew exactly who she needed to talk to for confirmation.

Ethan placed another piece on her plate. “Let’s eat first. We can talk after.”

The two of them finished their breakfast in a comfortable silence. When Ethan started clearing the table, Jasmine quickly stood up to help. “Let me get those.”

“You’re a guest,” Ethan said. “I can’t let a guest wash the dishes.”

“I’m hardly a guest. Seriously, let me do it. You already went through the trouble of making breakfast-I’d feel terrible making you do the dishes too.”

Ethan swept up the plates anyway. “Do you know how to make coffee?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“The espresso machine is right there on the sideboard. How about you make me a cup? That should square us up.

Jasmine smiled. “Deal.”

“But none for you,” Ethan added.

Knowing exactly what he meant, Jasmine laughed it off. “I used to drink it all the time before I got pregnant. A little bit now won’t hurt.”

“It’s not good for the baby.”

“Just a sip is fine.”

“Better not risk it.”

“Oh, come on, half a cup won’t do anything. I haven’t had any in ages, just let me have a little bit.”

The words left her mouth before she could think, and the air suddenly shifted, feeling unexpectedly intimate. Realizing her tone had sounded a bit too much like whining to get her way, Jasmine felt a wave of embarrassment.

Ethan, however, didn’t seem fazed. He just replied in his usual gentle voice, “Alright. Just a little bit, then.”

By the time she finished brewing the coffee, Ethan had already finished up in the kitchen and was sitting on the sofa.

As Jasmine walked over with the coffee, Ethan was mid-conversation on his phone. She handed the mug to him, and he reached out to take it with complete familiarity. There was no awkwardness or hesitation
