“The guy who beat up Chloe turned himself in,” Silas said. “Just some local thug with a couple of priors.. Apparently, he snuck into the hotel, got drunk, and crashed in that room. When Chloe walked in and disturbed him, the alcohol flared his temper, and he attacked her.”

It sounded airtight and completely believable. Jasmine hadn’t expected Ethan to move so quickly. The guy really was just a low-life thug taking the fall for a payout. To someone like him, spending a few days behind bars was a small price to pay for a massive chunk of cash.

Silas was actually suspicious, but he didn’t want to make a scene. A massive scandal would only end up damaging his own reputation. Besides, the manager of Celestial Garden had already come by to apologize in person and offer a hefty compensation package. Silas was ready to let it go.

“Jasmine…” Silas’s voice was much softer now, stripped of the previous night’s hostility. “We blamed you unfairly.”

“It’s fine,” Jasmine replied. “It’s not like the Vance family hasn’t wrongfully accused me before.”

Silas fell silent for a moment. “Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

“Why?” Jasmine asked coldly. “To head to family court for the divorce?”

Silas remained uncharacteristically gentle. “I only said that last night because I was angry.”

“It felt pretty sincere to me,” Jasmine said. “It’s obvious you’re dying to divorce me.”

“If I wanted a divorce, wouldn’t I have gotten one a long time ago? Why would I wait until now?”

Jasmine found herself at a loss for words.

He wasn’t wrong.

But she knew perfectly well that his reluctance to divorce her had nothing to do with love. To Silas, she was just a convenient shield-a perfect trophy wife to deflect attention from his shameless infatuation with his own brother’s wife.

When Jasmine didn’t answer, Silas spoke up again.

“What do I have to do to make you believe me?”

Jasmine timed her response perfectly, letting out a long, heavy sigh. “Silas, I know Grandma and Victoria dislike me. It’s not just because I haven’t gotten pregnant, it’s also because I just idle away at home all day. Why don’t I go to work at your company?”

Silas nearly laughed. “And what exactly would you do there?”

“Don’t forget, I graduated from Rivercrest University,” Jasmine countered. “I can at least handle some basic work. Besides, I’ve spent the last few years teaching myself about computer science just for you. I’m not some clueless novice anymore. Who knows, I might actually be of some help.”

Silas fell silent, turning it over in his mind. He was already wavering.

Jasmine struck while the iron was hot. “Think about it, Silas. Now that Grandma and Victoria are staying with us, conflict is bound to happen if I’m just lounging around the house every day. It’s better if I’m out working. Out of sight, out of mind.”

“But…” Silas hesitated.

Vance family tradition dictated that daughters-in-law stay out of the public eye.

Jasmine softly delivered her final coup de grâce. “Felicity needs peace more than anything during her postpartum recovery. If I stay home, the constant bickering will only disrupt her rest and upset her. Jus like she said yesterday, she feels like her using your sperm is the whole reason you and I keep clashing with the family.”

This was the silver bullet. Silas agreed instantly.

“I happen to need a secretary right now. Why don’t you take that spot for the time being?”

Jasmine let out a quiet breath of relief. Mission accomplished. Her next step was to get her foot in the door at his company, which was the only way she could get her hands on their data and client networks.

Feigning reluctance, Jasmine said, “But what about Grandma…?”

“I’ll handle Grandma and my mom,” Silas replied. “You don’t need to worry about them.”

“Are you sure it won’t put you in an awkward position? If it’s too much trouble, forget it. I don’t want to leave you caught in the middle.”

Silas chuckled. “After everything that happened yesterday, I didn’t think you’d still care about me.”

Jasmine rolled her eyes privately. “Of course I do. We’re still married, aren’t we?”

Silas’s tone turned entirely serious. “Don’t worry, Jasmine. I’m not going to divorce you.”

“I know,” Jasmine lied smoothly.

Silas then shifted gears. “Yesterday, Mr. Crawford brought up your father. Are they on really good terms?”

Jasmine sneered inwardly.

So this was his real angle.
