“I only found out myself after asking my dad.”

“We should have Arthur invite Mr. Crawford out for dinner sometime soon. It would be good for everyone to get together.”

Jasmine answered vaguely. “We should wait for a good time. Chief Crawford has only just taken up his po in Rivercrest. If people were to see him getting too close to us privately, wining and dining together so soon after his arrival, it would not reflect well on him.”

Silas found her logic sound. “True. Let’s revisit it later, then.” He chuckled softly. “It sounds like you’re not mad at me anymore.”

Jasmine didn’t bother replying.

Spending every single day putting on an act and spinning lies was utterly exhausting.

“Where are you?” Silas asked. “I’ll pick you up so we can head to the award ceremony together this afternoon.”

“I’ll go straight there,” Jasmine replied. “Let’s just meet at the venue.”

Silas didn’t push it. “Alright. See you this afternoon.”

Even after he hung up, the smile lingered on Silas’s face. Felicity had been eavesdropping on the whole call, and the resentment inside her churned.

She carried the baby out to him. “Silas, look at this little one. Leo wants you to hold him.”

Seeing Silas, the little guy reached out his tiny hands. Silas’s heart instantly melted. He took the baby into his arms, his eyes filling with warmth and affection. Felicity stood beside him, cooing at the baby, and the little boy beamed with a wide, toothless grin.

They looked every bit like a family of three.

Felicity looked up at his handsome face, her gaze soft with tenderness, and spoke in a gentle voice. “Silas, I had someone put in an overnight order for a custom suit for you. It should arrive soon, just in time for you to wear it to the ceremony this afternoon.”

“Thanks,” Silas murmured.

“Is Jasmine coming along?” Felicity asked.

His attention entirely fixed on the baby, Silas answered absentmindedly, “I just spoke with her. She said she’d be there.”

Felicity hid the bitter disappointment in her eyes. “That’s good. I was worried she wouldn’t show up.”

“She’s not like that,” Silas said. “This whole situation actually made me realize she’s quite reasonable. Sure, she gets upset when Grandma and the others misjudge her, but when it matters, she knows how to look at

the bigger picture.”

Felicity froze.

Was Silas actually praising Jasmine? For the past three years, let alone complimenting her, he hadn’t even wanted to look at that woman. How could he change his tune so suddenly?

Silas pressed a gentle kiss to Leo’s cheek. Watching the child grow day by day filled him with all the joy of being a father. Yet this child would never be able to call him “Dad.” The smile on Silas’s face went quieta

at once.

His smile faded slightly. “Felicity, there’s something I need to discuss with you.”

“What is it?” she asked.

“Let’s keep Leo’s newborn celebration quiet. No big party.”

Felicity had gotten pregnant only two months after Julian died. To hide the fact that the baby was actually Silas’s, Madeline had meticulously managed every single detail. They hadn’t even announced the birth day itself, terrified that people would count back the months and grow suspicious. Because of that secrecy, a lavish newborn celebration was out of the question; it had to be a simple family dinner limited to the Vance and Sterling families.

Felicity looked aggrieved. “But it’s our baby’s newborn celebration. Keeping it small makes me feel like we’re slighting him.”

“It’s just one celebration,” Silas coaxed. “He’ll have birthdays every year after this, and we can throw him proper parties then.”

Felicity perked up. “Then you have to promise you’ll be there for every single one of his birthdays.”

“Of course I will.”

Felicity nearly threw her arms around him, but her excitement plummeted at his next words.

“After all, I am his uncle.”

“Oh, and there’s one more thing,” Silas added.

Felicity gave a distracted murmur.

“I’ve agreed to let Jasmine start working at the corporation. It’ll give her something to do so she isn’t overthinking things at home, and it should cut down on the friction between her and Grandma. As for you, stop letting your mind wander. Jasmine isn’t petty; she won’t hold a grudge against you forever. You’re just overthinking it. We’re all family, so let’s try to be patient with one another and get along.”

Felicity bit her lip, fighting back tears. She was completely losing her grip on Silas’s true feelings. Just last night, he couldn’t bear to see her on her knees, and he had dragged her away with total disregard for Jasmine’s feelings. That proved he cared about her. Yet everything he was saying today made her feel utterly dispensable.
