“If anything happens to my husband, I will never forgive you!” Eleanor shrieked.

Jasmine stared back blankly, her eyes hollow with deep despair and sorrow. She no longer expected any shred of familial love from Eleanor. Her father was her only remaining tie to this family. If something happened to him, her last reason to care about them would die too.
Hugh rushed over and pulled Eleanor back. “Mom! Stop hitting her! Why are you always doing this?”
“Jasmine!” Eleanor spat, her teeth clenched in pure hatred. “I am begging you! You’re married into the Vance family now. Just go be Mrs. Vance and leave us alone! Stop coming back here and tearing this family apart!”
Jasmine’s eyes went vacant, looking right through her as if her soul had been completely drained away. Eleanor’s words pierced her ears like needles, striking a heavy blow to her chest.
Parting her trembling lips, Jasmine forced out a single word. “Fine.”
Just then, the emergency room light went out, and the surgeon stepped through the doors.
Eleanor rushed to him. “Doctor, is my husband going to be okay?”
Jasmine stood a few feet back. Her feet felt like lead, pinning her to the floor. The doctor’s voice cut clearly through the quiet hallway.
“It was an acute myocardial infarction. We’ve placed a stent and done everything we can. Now, it’s up to him to fight through it.”
Arthur was wheeled into the ICU, where family visits were strictly forbidden.
Having never faced a crisis like this before, Hugh was entirely out of his depth. “Mom… is Dad going to die?”
Eleanor shot a venomous glare at Jasmine. “That depends on whether your father can survive the bad luck some people keep bringing into this house.”
Every breath felt like agony to Jasmine. She took a moment to steady herself, forcing her voice to remain calm. “I give you my word. Once Dad recovers, I won’t come back here. And you can rest easy-I don’t want a single penny of the Thorne family fortune.”
Eleanor scoffed. “Oh, how noble. You expect me to believe you don’t want a piece of everything the Thornes own?”
Jasmine didn’t have the energy to argue. “Believe what you want, but I keep my promises. I have only one condition. Until Dad is fully recovered, we maintain a peace treaty. I won’t have him agitated again.”
“Fine,” Eleanor snapped. “As long as you keep your word, you have a deal.”
With that, Eleanor turned on her heel and left with Hugh.

Jasmine sat alone on the bench outside the intensive care unit, barely moving for over an hour.

Noticing her exhausted, drawn expression, a nurse walked over out of kindness. “You know, you don’t really need to wait out here. If anything changes, we’ll call you right away.”
“I know,” Jasmine replied softly. “I just want to be close to my dad.”
She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. She didn’t know how much time they had left together.
When her phone rang, and Silas’s name flashed on the screen, the awards ceremony suddenly flashed back into her mind.
“I can’t make it today,” she said the moment she picked up.
Silas’s irritation was immediate. “You promised you’d be there. How can you just change your mind at the last minute?”
Jasmine took a deep breath. “My dad is in the ICU.”
The line went quiet for a beat. “What happened? He was fine before.”
Rather than going into an explanation, Jasmine simply asked, “Can you come over?”
She was utterly exhausted, and the desperate urge to have a shoulder to lean on made the words slip out before she could stop them.
The moment she said it, she regretted it.
Why would she ever ask that of him? To Silas, an awards ceremony was infinitely more important than visiting a hospital.
But his response caught her completely off guard.
“I’m on my way.”
Jasmine froze for a few seconds. “You’re skipping the ceremony?”
“I’ll let Mr. Crawford know,” Silas said. “Which hospital?”
“Rivercrest General Hospital.”
Forty minutes later, Silas actually showed up.
Watching him hurry down the long corridor toward her, Jasmine experienced a sudden, fleeting illusion. For a split second, it felt as though they were just a normal, loving couple. As if the betrayal, the heartbreak, the lies, and the pain had never happened. He was her husband, she was his wife, and no matter what went wrong, they would always be each other’s rock.
Silas sat down beside her and took her hand in his. “Don’t worry. He’s going to make it through this.” Jasmine kept her head bowed as a single, scalding tear spilled over and splashed onto the back of his hand.

He pulled her into his arms, offering a quiet, soothing reassurance. “I’ll get the best specialists in the country on this. Just leave everything to me.”
Jasmine didn’t push him away. She didn’t have the strength to anymore. Her head pounded, and a dull, familiar ache was beginning to knot in her stomach.
“Jasmine,” Silas said softly.
“Yeah?” she replied, her voice devoid of energy.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Assuming he meant her father’s sudden illness, Jasmine said, “I just did.”
“I mean about Felicity and me.”
Jasmine froze slightly, pulling back to sit up straight. “What are you trying to say?”
Silas reached out, gently smoothing down a few stray strands of her messy hair. “You’ve known for a while, haven’t you? About her and me…”
