Yvan was anxious but felt helpless. He couldn’t find an opportunity to show Winifred Steven’s true colors.
Fortunately, Steven hadn’t gone up to Winifred’s apartment again these past few days.
This meant they hadn’t taken that step yet.
But the inevitable would eventually happen.
One day, Steven drove Winifred home. When they arrived at Summit View, Winifred got out to say goodbye, but Steven called her back.
He got out of the car too and walked over to her.
Yvan watched them secretly from a distance.
“Is there something else?” Winifred asked, suddenly a bit nervous.
Back at the restaurant, she could tell Steven had wanted to say something, but she had deliberately changed the subject. Now that he’d stopped her, what was he going to say?
Steven gathered his courage and tried to take Winifred’s hand. But she instinctively took a step back. Only after she’d moved away did she realize her reaction was inappropriate. She quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, I… I…”
Although she had been telling herself to try a new relationship, when the moment actually came, she found herself resisting.
Steven was slightly disappointed but didn’t overthink it, assuming Winifred was just being shy.
He pulled his hand back, deciding to wait a bit longer before confessing his feelings to her.
“Winifred, I just wanted to tell you, I’m going to Wye for a three-day training tomorrow. Wait for me to come back.”
When he came back, he would confess to her.
Winifred looked down. “Oh.”
Steven paused, then added, “I won’t be able to give you rides for the next few days, so be careful. Call me if you need anything.”
“Mm-hmm.”
“If you have any questions about the application materials, you can call me too.”
“Okay, thanks.”
“…Winifred, you don’t have to be so formal with me,” Steven said, taking a step closer.
Winifred wondered if there was something wrong with her. Why didn’t she feel even a ripple of emotion for a man as outstanding and caring as Steven?
Bravely, she suddenly stepped forward and gave him a light hug.
Steven hadn’t expected her to hug him. He trembled slightly, a thrill running through him.
Winifred stood there in a daze for a moment before turning to walk home. Yvan followed.
Suddenly, Winifred spun around. Yvan quickly ducked behind a corner.
Winifred thought she was really getting paranoid lately. She had hoped that having Steven drive her would make the feeling of being watched go away, but it was still there.
Maybe no one was following her at all; maybe it was just in her head. Steven had said she was just too stressed.
Maybe she needed to relax.
She sighed and got into the elevator.
Winifred didn’t have many hobbies; her only way to relax was to cook something she enjoyed eating.
She cooked a whole table full of food, only realizing when she was done that she couldn’t possibly finish it all by herself.
Maybe she should give some to her neighbor, Fitch. He had given her that braised pork last night, so it was only polite to return the favor.
His cooking was so awful; it would be a good chance for him to have a decent meal.
Winifred glanced at the window across from hers. The light was on, which meant Fitch was home.
So she packed a few dishes into food containers and went to knock on the door next to hers.
