That day, Winifred told Yvan not to pick her up from work.
Her leg was feeling a little better, and she could manage the walk.
Besides, he always drove that conspicuous car of his. Sooner or later, someone was going to notice.
And it was only a ten-minute walk. Did he really need to be so clingy, driving her to and from work every day?
Yvan grumbled for a bit but eventually agreed.
Winifred hadn't walked far from the hospital when someone blocked her path.
She looked up and frowned. It was Teresa again.
“Winifred, was it you who went crying to Yvan and badmouthed me?” Teresa demanded furiously.
Winifred glanced at her. “I just told him the truth.”
“Cut the act,” Teresa snapped. “If you hadn't badmouthed me, why would Yvan have been so harsh with me? Why would he try to kick me out of Riverside City? You must have slandered me to him.”
Winifred frowned. “Have you ever stopped to think that maybe Yvan wants you gone simply because you’re annoying?”
“Winifred, who are you calling annoying?” Teresa’s voice rose.
“You know Yvan doesn’t like you, yet you keep pestering him and trying to break us up. Isn’t that annoying?” Winifred retorted. “Yvan and I are deeply in love, and you, an outsider, keep trying to cause trouble. You’re not just annoying, you’re malicious.”
“You—you’re lying! Yvan doesn’t really like you,” Teresa said, fuming. “He’s just intrigued by something new.”
“Who said I don’t love Winifred?” Yvan’s voice suddenly cut in.
Both Winifred and Teresa turned to look at him.
“Yvan…” Teresa’s expression changed in a heartbeat, and she immediately put on a pitiful act.
“Don’t call me that. We’re not that close.”
Winifred’s voice was cold. “You’re asking me what’s wrong? What did you promise me before? You said you would handle it and that she wouldn’t bother me again. So why did she just show up?”
Yvan frowned. “My subordinate messed up. Just you wait, I’ll take care of it right now.”
He immediately pulled out his phone and called Eileen, his voice sharp. “Eileen, what’s going on? Didn’t I tell you to keep an eye on Teresa? What were my instructions if she didn’t leave Zion today?”
Eileen sounded distressed. “I’m sorry, Mr. Brown. I was just about to report to you, but I got busy and forgot.”
“Then get on it, now!” Yvan barked. “You can’t even handle a simple task like this. What good are you?”
Eileen apologized profusely and quickly hung up to call Jason.
Yvan put his phone away and turned back to Winifred, his demeanor instantly changing as he tried to appease her. “Winifred, I promise Teresa won’t bother you again. She’ll be leaving Riverside City very soon.”
Winifred gave him a sidelong glance. “Why are you so harsh with your employee? She’s a woman, right? Don’t make her cry.”
Yvan was unconcerned. “Anyone who works for me has to be tough. Besides, she didn’t do her job, so she deserved to be reprimanded.”
