I raised my head and met Lonnie’s gaze, saying each word clearly. “If you lose… I want you to arrange an introduction to the Thorne family.”
My first thought was to just ask for Kael directly. But that felt too risky, too blunt. It would make me look suspicious.
After all, Kael’s status was unclear. Me, a Hidmoon Pack Omega, suddenly asking for him? People would wonder.
Lonnie paused, then let out a short, derisive laugh. The contempt in his eyes was plain.
He probably pegged me as another social climber, using medicine as an excuse to get close to the powerful Thorne family.
But all I wanted was to find Kael, to fulfill my mother’s last wish. I didn’t care what he thought.
After a moment’s silence, he smirked and agreed. “Fine.”
“Good. Then begin, Dr. Chandler.” My nerves pulled tight. A sense of urgency pushed at the back of my mind.
Lonnie took his case over to the Luna. He used professional equipment to check the speed of her nerve signals. He pressed key points along her leg, watching for any reaction.
Then he opened the case. He took out a syringe and that blue vial of wolf spirit serum.
Glenn stood to the side, looking back and forth between us, his expression conflicted.
“This serum is approved by the Wolf Medical Association. The clinical success rate is 85 percent. Don’t worry–you’ll feel a difference within 30 minutes.” Lonnie sounded utterly confident as he gave the injection.
A flicker of hope lit up the Luna’s eyes. She gave a small nod.
“Glenn, relax!” Joshua jumped in. “Dr. Chandler is the Thorne family’s private physician. Plenty of high- rank werewolves beg for his help and get turned down. She’ll be fine!”
The room fell quiet, waiting for the medicine to work.
Ten minutes passed. The Luna tried to move her leg. She blinked, confused. “Nothing. Still no strength.”
Lonnie frowned. He checked his watch, starting to look uneasy. “Impossible. The effect should be noticeable by now. Perhaps her body is absorbing it slowly. Give it more time.”
Another ten minutes. The Luna tried again. Still nothing. She couldn’t even lift her leg a little.
Sweat beaded on Lonnie’s forehead. His face darkened. “This isn’t possible… It shouldn’t be…”

Chapter 10 The Wager
“Dr. Chandler. It’s been half an hour.” My voice was even. No gloating, just stating a fact.
Finished
His expression soured further, but he had no comeback. He just shot me a sharp, warning look with his wolf–bright eyes.
“I told you. The root cause is the central nerve damage and the inflammation in the pathways. The serum is only treating the surface.”
I stood up. From my pack, I took out a sterile set of thin needles and a portable nerve stimulator.
These were tools modified by the Hidmoon Pack, based on the latest nerve rehab technology.
Seeing Lonnie’s serum fail, Joshua shut up. He just stared at me, not trying to stop me anymore.
I walked over to the Luna. I placed electrode pads at her temples and the base of her skull. I switched on the stimulator, adjusting the frequency. A gentle, pulsing current began to stimulate the damaged nerve pathways.
Then I took a few of the fine needles. I placed them precisely into specific points on her scalp, targeting the brain’s motor centers.
She flinched at first, a little uncomfortable. But soon, her brow smoothed. “My head… feels clearer. That heavy, foggy feeling is lifting.”
I nodded and gestured to Glenn.
He stepped forward quickly. Following my quiet directions, he removed the Luna’s shoes and socks and rolled up her pant legs.
