I nodded. “I know. I’m not ready to get too deep into Brookstone Pack’s crowd yet. Getting dragged into this so early was an accident–I had to save Elder Hicks.

“Don’t worry. I’ll keep you safe, no matter what.”

After he said that, I looked at him seriously, my voice firm. “Kael, I don’t wanna be protected all the time. I like being free. I wanna stand right next to you, not hide behind you.”

Kael stared at me for a long time, emotions showing in his eyes. He kissed my hair, then pulled me tight into his arms. He didn’t say a single word…

On Monday, I went back to school.

Finals were coming up soon, so I saw students rushing around the school everywhere.

As soon as I walked into the math class, Laura looked at me and teased, “Whoa, Lira. Haven’t seen you in a week. Did you miss me?”

After she said that, she started laughing her head off.
