Chapter 19 The Auction Showdown
Lira’s POV:
My words hung in the air. The guests around us looked stunned.
Their eyes seemed to say I was “brazen” for talking back to high–born ladies.
A flicker of surprise crossed Steve’s face too.
Christine’s expression darkened instantly. Her wolf eyes flashed as she glared at me.
Victoria sensed the killing intent. She stirred inside me, ready for a fight.

Leslie reacted fast. Her eyes welled up with tears in a blink. Her voice trembled, choked with hurt.
“Ms. Krom, we were just being friendly. Why must you be so harsh?
“We can’t choose our birth. Why use such cold words to wound us?”
Her voice was perfectly pitched–not too loud, not too soft. Just enough to carry.
Soon, passing guests were drawn by the scene. They gathered around, whispering.
“That lowly Omega is so ungrateful! Ms. Delarosa and Ms. Malcom were being kind!”
“Exactly! They are noble ladies. They stooped to talk to her. How dare she be rude?”
“Look at her, standing with Mr. Garcia. She’s acting bold because of him!”
Listening, I had to admire Leslie’s act.
Her skill at twisting facts and playing the victim—it was almost as good as my stepmother’s.
I curled the corner of my mouth. I looked at her with open mockery. “Ms. Delarosa, you look about 24 or 25, right?”
“What do you mean?” She frowned. More confusion filled her eyes. The tears made her look fragile, pitiful.
I kept my voice cold and firm. “You’re an adult. Act like one. Drop the weak, wounded act. Your performance is clumsy. Everyone can see it.”
I paused. “I made myself clear. Different paths, different circles. You’re high–rank werewolves, comfortable noble ladies. I’m a parentless orphan. We were never meant to mix.
“Besides, Steve and I are just acquaintances. Don’t waste your energy on me. I have no time for these games.”
As a healer from the Hidmoon Pack, we weren’t fighters. But our skill at healing wolf spirits earned us some respect, even among high ranks.”
These women were born noble, but their standing in the wider clan might not be above mine.

So even without revealing Victoria, I had no reason to play along.
After speaking, I ignored their ugly faces, turned to Steve and said, “Let’s go. The auction must have started.”
With that, I stood straight and walked out of the lounge area first.
Steve followed close behind. As he passed Christine and Leslie, his eyes were cold. He didn’t even glance their way.
When we walked out, the auction stage in the center of the hall was set. It had begun.
The point of these charity auctions was to donate, to gain goodwill. So almost every lot would sell.
Most bidders were there to show off their wealth and generosity.
Right then, a well–preserved Renaissance painting was on the block.
Steve had wanted to buy artwork for his mother. He joined the bidding.
After a few rounds, the price reached 500,000 dollars. The auctioneer raised his gavel, ready to close the deal.
“One million!”
A clear, deliberately loud voice cut through the quiet.
Every head in the room turned toward the sound.
It was Christine, just out of the lounge.
Under everyone’s gaze, she lifted her chin proudly. A proper smile was on her face. She spoke with passionate flair. “As the younger generation, it’s our duty to support the Pack Alliance.
“This one million is my contribution to charity.”
She finished and deliberately turned her head toward Steve. Her eyes were full of showy pride, as if waiting for his praise.
But Steve didn’t look at her. Not once.
He was holding the auction catalog, leaning down to explain the upcoming highlights to me in a low voice.
When he finished, he turned and smiled at me. His eyes were gentle. Christine’s grand gesture went completely unnoticed.
Seeing this, Christine’s face darkened instantly.
Her hands clenched into tight fists. Her wolf form partially emerged. Sharp claws dug into her own palms. Her wolf eyes blazed as she glared at me, as if she’d tear me apart any second.
