Paul thought for a sec and then said coldly, “Don’t stress. I’ll fix this for you. Besides, it’s high time the Brewer family got rid of some trash.”

After he said that, he looked at John. “John, go fetch Lawyer Norton.”

“Yes, sir,” John said in a hurry, then bolted out the door.

Paul struggled to reach into the drawer next to his bed, pulled out a check, and handed it to me. “Ms. Krom, this is for today’s work.”

I grabbed the check and stuffed it into my small bag.

It was a ton of cash–enough to buy a bunch of supplies for the Hidmoon Pack. Perfect for a Christmas gift for Enid and the rest of the crew.

Paul watched me tuck the check away, then kept going. “What went down today was a black eye for my family. I heard how good you are with medicine from Bruce.

“So when I was at my lowest, I told John to find you no matter what and bring you here. Real talk—you were my last shot back then.

“I knew those two jerks wouldn’t let me live–they wanted to snag my spot as top elder of the Cloudburst Pack early. But they didn’t have the guts to kill me straight up. So they’d stop John from bringing you here, and I’d stay out cold till I croaked.

“But they never saw you coming. You messed up all their plans and saved my life. I feel bad dragging you into this mess, though. Don’t worry–I’ll make it right, I swear.”

I looked at the old guy, kind of feeling for him. Nobody would’ve guessed that the badass head of the Brewer family, the famous top elder of the Cloudburst Pack, would get backstabbed by his own sons.

I turned to Paul and said softly, “Then you gotta get better quickly. There’s still a lot you gotta handle yourself. And I’m pretty sure–since they blew it this time, they won’t cut you any slack next time.”

He sighed. “You’re right. I know I gotta man up. They already went this far–why should I go easy on them?

“But you really throw me for a loop, Ms. Krom. You look like just another Omega. Not only are you awesome at medicine, but you’re sharp and think ahead too.” He gave me a meaningful look when he said

that.

I kept my mouth shut.

Right then, the door creaked open. John walked in with a middle–aged guy dressed in a suit.

“Mr. Brewer, Lawyer Norton is here,” John said.

Loren Norton looked at Paul and asked politely, “Elder Brewer, did you call me here to change any of your

calls?”

Paul was about to speak when the bedroom door suddenly crashed open from the outside!

My wolf spirit Victoria caught a whiff of trouble right away, and Lily tensed up, ready to fight.

The next second, Rick walked in with a few other Brewer family folks.

I looked at them and scoffed under my breath. They were all such phonies–total drama queens.

As soon as Rick stepped in, he dropped to his knees by the bed, crying and begging Paul. “Dad! Dad, forgive me this time! I didn’t mean to hurt you–I got talked into it!”

And Gladys? She dropped to her knees too, pointing at her throat over and over. Then she narrowed her wolf eyes and glared at me like she wanted to kill me.

I almost laughed when I saw her–she couldn’t even talk!

Her voice had gotten on my nerves.
