hapter 66 Goodbyes and Hidden Rage

Lira’s POV:

His sudden move scared the crap out of me.

I wrapped my arms around his neck without thinking, waiting till my heart calmed down.

Staring into his deep eyes, I asked, all nervous, “Kael, what are you doing?”

His deep voice sounded happy. “Nice to hear. Didn’t think you’d say my name so easily–guess you missed

me.”

My face got hot; I felt annoyed. I tried to push him off. “Who missed you? Don’t be such a narcissist.”

Kael grabbed my hands, then bent down and took off my high heels. His magnetic voice was soft. “If high heels hurt, don’t wear them that often.”

His kind words made my heart skip a beat for no reason.

I shifted uncomfortably and said, “I don’t wear them much anyway.”

Watching him be so gentle, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. He was such a noble Lycan King–so many great high–rank werewolf ladies were waiting in line to be his mate. Why would he go after someone like me, an Omega?

Was it just because I saved him once?

I still hadn’t figured out why my mom told me to find him. And Victoria always felt drawn to him, like she trusted him.

He had so many secrets I hadn’t figured out…

I stared at him, zoned out. He suddenly chuckled and asked, “Why are you staring at me like that? What, you into me?”

I snapped out of it right away, embarrassed. I turned my head to look out the window. “Who’s into you? You’re not the Moon Goddess–I don’t have to worship you.”

I snapped at him, but Kael didn’t get mad. He just patted my head gently. “Did I ever tell you how bad I missed you?”

My heart skipped again. I looked into his eyes without thinking.

He kept going. “I gotta head back to the Thunder Pack soon. It might take a while for me to come back. I missed you so bad today I had to come see you first. I’ll leave my personal guard, Carl, here with you.

“That James’s a total snake. So while I’m gone, Carl will protect you. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

When he said he was leaving, a weird sadness came over me.

“No need. I can protect myself.” I tried to keep my voice cold.

Kael let me go, stared straight into my eyes, and said seriously, “Listen to me. I know you can take care of yourself, but you’re still just an Omega. James’s the Alpha of the Cloudburst Pack–he’s got plenty of ways to hurt you.

“Do it for me, okay? At least let me know you’re safe.”

Looking into his firm eyes, my heart felt full–like something was filling it up.

I’d never felt this way before. Besides Enid, no one had ever made such detailed plans for me, or cared so much about keeping me safe.

I felt loved, like someone actually cared about me.

But I knew I had to walk my own path. No matter how strong others were, their strength wasn’t mine. Only if I got strong myself could I protect everything that was mine…

That night, he dropped me off at my place, then left for the Thunder Pack–leaving Carl behind.

I went back to my usual stuff, keeping busy.

Third–Person Perspective:

In a private high–end room at the Cloudburst Pack’s hospital…

Barbara was out cold for a full day and night before she woke up.

As soon as James saw her wake up, he slapped her hard–no words, no hesitation.

Sandra got scared and shifted into her wolf form right away, hiding Barbara behind her.

“What are you doing?! She just woke up–how could you hit her? No matter what she did wrong, she’s still our daughter!” Sandra cried.

James was fuming. He pointed a finger at her and yelled, “You coddled her too much! Last night’s mess made me lose all my face in the upper circle! Now everyone knows I have a daughter who’s pure evil. How am I supposed to show my face in the Alpha circle ever again?!”

Sandra had nothing to say. Even she hadn’t expected Barbara to do something like that.

Barbara had lost her mind. She pushed Sandra away and sobbed, hurt and mad. “Dad, how could you be so selfish? I’m your daughter! You won’t even help me–you only care about your own face! Do you even care about me and Mom?”

Sandra quickly covered Barbara’s mouth, then turned to James. “Barbara’s not thinking straight right now. Don’t fight with her. I’ll talk to her–you go home first.”

James narrowed his wolf eyes, glared at her, snorted, and turned around to leave.

Barbara stared at the closed door, then swatted everything off the table next to her in a rage.

Last night, she’d lost all her face–not only did she blow her best chance to be Michael’s chosen mate, but she’d also made a total fool of herself.

She wished she could shift right now, catch Lira, and tear her apart!

Sandra hugged her tight, patting her back over and over to calm her down.

Barbara couldn’t hold it in anymore. She buried her face in Sandra’s arms and sobbed like a baby. “Mom, I hate her–I hate her so much.”

Sandra patted her back gently, her heart breaking. “Barbara, it’s okay. Mom’s here. It’s okay.

Barbara cried and asked, “Mom, why? Why’s Dad treating me like this? Michael cut me off too–all because of Lira! If she never showed up, none of this would’ve happened. I hate her!”

Sandra held her tight and whispered, “Barbara, listen to me. Your dad’s not really mad at you–he just cares too much about his face. If you love Michael that badly, I will make sure he bonds with you and becomes your chosen mate!

“And as for Lira…” She paused, her eyes turning mean. “Barbara, don’t worry. I will run that bitch out of the Silverwhip Pack for good!”
