Chapter 144
The drug needed time to work its way out of her system.
Thalia fell into a deep sleep soon after.
The hospital was quiet. The smell of disinfectant hung in the air. Around ten at night, her phone rang.
She jolted awake and reached for it, but Darion grabbed her phone first.
“She’s asleep,” he said flatly before hanging up.
Thalia’s eyes were still hazy with sleep. “Give me my phone,” she demanded.
Darion ignored her and set it on the nightstand. “Go back to sleep,” he said.
Thalia reached for her phone anyway.
But he suddenly stood up, lifted the blanket, and climbed into the bed. He lay on his side and pulled her into his arms.
“What are you doing?” she protested. “Get off. This is a single bed!”
Darion held her in place and closed his eyes. “You want me to sit in that chair all night?” he asked. “Don’t you feel bad for me?”
Thalia laughed in disbelief. “You can leave,” she said. “I never asked you to stay.”
“Not happening,” he replied, tightening his hold on her. “I’m not leaving you here alone.”
His warmth wrapped around her. He held her in a grip that left no room for resistance, and he didn’t ask if she wanted this.
Thalia’s body felt weak. His heartbeat pounded against her ear. She turned her face toward the window. The sharp sting of emotion rose in her chest again.
The phone rang again.
This time it wasn’t hers.
Darion’s phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out. His brow furrowed as he answered. “Hello?”
“Darion, Keith is missing!” Miya’s panicked voice came through the speaker.
Darion’s tone turned serious. “What happened?”
Miya’s voice trembled. “I came home from work to play with him,” she explained.
“We went down to the park, but I looked away for just a second. When I turned back, he was gone. I’ve searched everywhere.
I can’t find him anywhere. What do I do? I lost Keith.”
Darion and Thalia were lying so close that Thalia could hear every word through the phone.
She closed her eyes and let out a cold, mocking smile.
