Thalia couldn’t sleep a wink all night. By morning, her throat was sore, and her head felt like it was stuffed with cotton.
She heard her phone ringing, but she just didn’t have the energy to pick it up. She was barely awake for a moment before drifting right back to sleep.
Later, she was jolted awake by a sudden sting on the back of her hand.
Thalia opened her eyes and saw a doctor in a white coat checking the IV drip.
“Ms. Coleman, you’re finally awake! You gave me such a fright. Since you hadn’t come out all morning, I thought you were just sleeping in, so I didn’t want to disturb you.
“But when it was already evening and you still hadn’t come out, I got worried and came to check, only to find you passed out with a fever!”
As soon as Thalia opened her eyes, the nanny hurried over, sounding anxious.
Thalia’s head was still spinning, and her throat was so dry and sore that swallowing felt like she was gulping down razor blades.
“Thank you,” Thalia rasped.
Her voice was so hoarse it was barely recognizable.
The nanny let out a sigh of relief. “I’m just glad you’re awake. Let’s try some fever meds first, and if that doesn’t help, we’ll have to take you to the hospital.”
Thalia’s throat hurt so much, she decided not to say anything at all.
The nanny hurried off to tell Diana the news.

Diana was wheeled into the room, her brows furrowed. “You silly girl, how could you just keep sleeping when you weren’t feeling well? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
Thalia said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Grandma. I made you worry.”
Her voice was so raspy, it hurt just hearing it.
“Don’t talk for now. Just get some rest,” Diana quickly patted Thalia’s leg, urging her to stay quiet and rest.
The doctor grabbed a few more packs of medicine and then left the room.
The nanny brought over some water, and Thalia took a few sips. The liquid soothed her throat, making her feel a bit better.
The nanny said, “I made some shredded chicken porridge. You need to eat something, or your stomach will ache later.”

Her head was spinning, her body felt heavy, and her eyelids kept fighting to stay open. She couldn’t even think about food.
After eating just half a bowl of porridge, she said, “Just take it away for now.”
The nanny looked worried. “Thalia, try to finish the rest. You hardly ate anything.”
Thalia replied, “I just can’t eat anymore.”
Diana said, “Then just rest. If you get hungry later, you can eat some more.”
Thalia lay back down and said, “Diana, it’s just a cold and a fever. I’ll be fine.”
But Diana looked worried. “Thalia, tell me, what’s really been going on lately? The nanny told me you didn’t look well when you got home yesterday.”
The nanny was the one who took care of them.
Thalia forced a smile. “Really, it’s nothing. I was just exhausted last night and got home late. I probably caught a chill, that’s all. It’s no big deal.”
