Blackburn Manor.

Little Keith sat in the living room, every now and then looking hopefully toward the front door. When the one he hoped would come home didn’t appear, he’d drop his head and went back to fiddling with his toy.

An attendant watched over him nearby, and Jadiel Pratt was not far off. The whole manor felt especially quiet and still.

Just then, the sound of a car engine drifted in. Keith’s eyes lit up instantly. He dropped his toy, scrambled to his feet, and dashed toward the door.

The car pulled up to the manor entrance, and as the door opened, Keith saw Darion Blackburn step out. He immediately called out excitedly, “Darry!”

Then he saw a woman step out from the passenger side. Before he could even see her clearly, he blurted out, “Mom!”

Darion’s voice was cold. “It’s Tally, not your mom.”

Keith froze, his obsidian eyes blinking. His excitement faded, and he called out politely, “Tally.”

Thalia got out of the car and glanced at the little boy standing by the door. He was cute, almost too perfect,

and she remembered seeing Emely’s photos. Keith really did look a lot like her.

But Thalia simply couldn’t warm up to him.

He was Miya’s kid, after all.

But she wasn’t about to take it out on a child.

She just responded quietly and headed into the living room.

Keith watched her pass by, shyly, then turned to Darion. “Darry, why haven’t you come home in so long? I really missed you.”

Now that Keith was in kindergarten, he talked a lot more. His eyes were full of hope as he wrapped his arms around Darion’s leg.

Darion bent down, picked Keith up, and asked, “Did you finish your homework?”

Keith nodded earnestly. “Yeah, Miss Strawberry even praised me!”

“Good,” Darion replied. “Keep it up.”

He took out his phone, snapped a picture of Keith, and sent it off to a familiar number.

It was the number Miya used to use. He wasn’t sure if she still had it, but if she did, she’d get the text and see Keith’s photo.

Keith watched curiously and asked, “Darry, what are you doing?”

Darion raised his eyebrow at that, then handed his phone over to Keith. “Make sure we look good in the picture.”

“Yeah!” Keith chirped.

He climbed down from Darion’s lap, holding the phone in both tiny hands, and took a photo of them.

Thalia frowned slightly and asked, “What’s going on here?”

Darion sat down next to her and said in a low voice, “It’s just the kid wanting to take a picture of us. He’s trying to do something nice.”

He turned his head to look at her, his eyes sharp and focused. “You’re not seriously going to hold it against a kid, are you?”

Thalia shot him a cool glance. “Is this really the kid’s idea, or is it yours?”
