Thalia stared at the pistol in front of her, a spark of excitement flickering in her eyes. She’d never even touched one before, but now it was time to get serious and learn.

She took a deep breath, picked up the pistol, and realized it was lighter than she expected. She turned it over in her hands, inspecting every detail.

Darion stepped closer and said, “If you want to master it, you gotta know it inside and out. I’ll show you how to break it down and put it back together, so you get familiar with every piece. Know yourself, know your weapon, and you’ll always come out on top.”

Thalia blinked at him in surprise. “When did you pick up all these skills?”

Darion shrugged, “Just a personal hobby.”

Thalia could tell he wasn’t being completely honest, but she didn’t really care. She just focused on the here and now. If he was willing to teach her, she’d give it her all. Whatever she learned, it would be hers to keep.

Darion explained everything in detail, and Thalia listened closely. After trying it out a few times, she got a feel for how the pistol worked. Next up was learning how to shoot.

This wasn’t something she could pick up overnight. It would take a lot of practice, but right now, Thalia had all the time in the world.

Two days later, Darion drove her out to a villa on the edge of the city. In the garden, there was an entrance leading down to the basement. Once inside, she realized the place was massive.

The bodyguards were all stone-faced and cold, and when their eyes landed on Thalia, she felt their intimidating gaze pressing down on her.

Her body instinctively tensed, and she kept her eyes forward, refusing to let her gaze wander.

At last, they stopped outside a room. The bodyguard nodded at Darion, then pulled out a key and unlocked the door.

There was a faint, coppery smell of blood lingering in the air.

Thalia saw Matthew strung up by his wrists in the middle of the room. His head hung low, and his whole body was a mess, barely any skin left intact.

The sight hit her hard, leaving her stunned and pale. She couldn’t process it all at once.

Darion put his arm around her shoulders and said, “Just teaching him a lesson. He tried to kill you. I could’ve ended him right here, but I didn’t. That’s mercy.”

Steeling herself, Thalia stepped inside.

Matthew, hanging there, heard the noise and managed to lift his eyelids. When he saw who it was, he forced a weak grin. “Thalia, long time no see…”

Thalia shot him an icy, contemptuous look, her disgust barely hidden. She cut straight to the point. “Who put you up to killing me?”

Matthew didn’t answer her question. He was struggling to breathe, coughing hard before finally speaking. “I still remember how you used to wait for me outside our dorm, looking up at my window. That look on your face… I’ll never forget it.”

Darion’s eyes grew even colder.

Thalia frowned, “Why are you bringing up ancient history? What’s the point?”

Matthew let out a sigh, “Yeah, it’s been ages. Nothing’s the same anymore…”

He stared at her, his eyes full of something old and heavy. Finally, an apologetic look crossed his face. “I can’t tell you…”

“Why?” Thalia asked, her tone cold and demanding.
