The night was deep, and Darion’s tall silhouette was stretched by the moonlight. Loneliness and chill clung to him as he stood in the courtyard of Rosewood Manor. He took out a cigarette and lit it.
The rich taste of nicotine flooded his lungs, dulling his senses. Darion glanced up at the room where Thalia was. Wisps of pale smoke rose, veiling his striking, chiseled face.
Thalia was tossing and turning, drifting in and out of sleep, when she suddenly felt someone standing right next to her bed.
She blinked her eyes open, and just as she suspected, there really was someone there.
She lifted her hand to block her view, shooting him a glare. “What, are you some kind of ghost?”
Darion yanked back the covers and climbed right into bed, wrapping Thalia up in his arms without hesitation. “Thalia…”
Thalia instantly caught the scent of smoke on him and pushed him away in disgust. “Get off! Don’t touch
me!”
But Darion only tightened his hold around her. “Thalia.”
Thalia felt a sudden wave of nausea. “Seriously, get off, I feel sick…”
Darion froze for a moment, then released her.
Thalia scrambled out of bed and rushed to the bathroom, where she dry-heaved for a while.
Darion followed behind her, his dark, intense eyes locked onto her. “Are you pregnant?”
Thalia frowned. “It’s the cigarette smell on you. It’s so strong, and it’s making me nauseous.”
She rinsed her mouth, and the nausea faded away. She felt relieved.
Thalia shot him a frosty look. “I take the pill every time. Did you forget?”
Darion’s expression grew darker. He kept his distance and said, “You don’t need the pill. I use protection.”
Thalia scoffed.
“Then what was the point of getting your vasectomy reversed?” she shot back.
Silence settled between them in the bathroom.
Thalia left the bathroom and climbed back into bed.
But the sheets and pillows reeked of cigarette smoke, and the smell made her feel sick.
Fed up, Thalia stripped the bed and replaced everything with fresh sheets and pillowcases.
Darion went back to his room, and when he came back, he leaned in close on purpose. “I took a shower. See? No more smell.”

Thalia instinctively held her breath as he approached, but since he obviously planned to stick around, she slowly let herself relax.
Now he just carried a faint scent of soap, no trace of smoke to make her feel sick.
Thalia decisively rolled over, turning her back to him.
Darion lay down behind her, pulled her close, and pressed his forehead to her shoulder.
The room was enveloped in silence for a brief moment.
Thalia felt uneasy. She’d never been this sensitive to cigarette smoke before. ‘Could it be that the birth control failed?’ she wondered.
‘Am I really pregnant?’ Thalia thought, her heart skipping a beat.
She’d have to buy a pregnancy test tomorrow and find out for herself.
She really couldn’t afford to be pregnant right now.
