His tone softened a little. “Now, do you still think I was being harsh to her?”

She looked down slightly, hesitated for a moment, then said, “You’ve been in a rough mood lately, so I thought you were just taking it out on her.”

Darion sighed quietly. “There’s no cure for the poison in Keith’s system”

Thalia’s eyes shot open. “What?!”

She looked up at him, stunned. “Then…”

She couldn’t bring herself to finish. After all, they both knew what that meant.

No cure meant Keith was doomed. He wasn’t even four yet. His life had barely started…

Darion released her wrist and spoke in a low, heavy voice, “They’re still working on a cure, but nobody knows when it’ll be ready. And whether Keith can survive until then… that’s up in the air.”

He paused, giving her a troubled look. “I’ve been really stressed these days. If my mood has affected you. I’m really sorry.”

“No!”

Thalia shook her head instinctively. “I’m fine, really. Diana just wanted me to check on you today, to see what’s going on.”

“It didn’t affect you?”

Darion turned his eyes away, a subtle sadness passing through them.

Seeing that look on Darion’s face, Thalia’s heart was suddenly in turmoil. Her emotions were all over the place, and she couldn’t get a grip on herself. Not wanting to dwell on it, she cut straight to another question. “So, where’s Quinn now?”

“I had Ryan take him somewhere else,” Darion replied quietly.

Thalia let out a breath of relief, then asked, “Are you meeting him now?”

“Alright,” Thalia said.

He nodded again and said, “Let her stay here tonight. I’ll arrange for someone to take her back in the morning. Tell her not to wander around until the wedding’s over.”

“Okay,” Thalia agreed.

Thalia nodded, then turned and started walking back toward the villa.

After a few steps, she paused, unable to hold back, and called out, “Try to spend more time with Keith these days.”

As soon as she finished, she quickly slipped inside.

Darion watched Thalia’s slender silhouette as she slipped inside, his eyes growing gentler for a moment before he turned to leave.
