Thalia glanced at her.

Viola noticed Thalia’s look and let out a soft laugh. “Don’t be surprised,” she said. ‘I’m just disappointed he can’t seem to get his act together. He’s got no real skills except stirring up trouble. I keep hoping he’ll finally grow up and stop doing these childish things.

Thalia lowered her gaze and said, “He’s doing it all for Wendy.”

Viola let out a soft sigh. “Love really messes people up. If he’d just come to his senses and confessed to Wendy earlier, none of this drama would’ve happened. I honestly can’t figure out what goes on in his head. He must have rocks for brains.”

Thalia was speechless.

The car fell silent.

When they arrived at the hospital, Jason had already finished emergency treatment and was transferred to a hospital room. The bullet had been removed from his thigh, but he was still out cold.

The room smelled strongly of disinfectant. Jason’s father, Mr. Campbell, was standing off to the side, talking with a doctor. When he saw them come in, he waved the doctor away.

He looked at Viola and said, “Your mom’s upstairs. Go check on her later. She’s pretty shaken up.”

Viola nodded. “Alright, I will.”

Mr. Campbell added. “When he wakes up, talk to him about drawing up the divorce papers and getting them signed. Let’s ust get this over with.”

Viola glanced at him. “Why don’t you tell him yourself?”

Mr. Campbell’s face darkened. “Because he actually listens to you.”

Viola scoffed “Not this time. He’s the one who pushed for the marriage. He’s got a thing for Wendy Adkins. He’s practically one step away from sealing the deal. No way he’s backing out now.”

Mr. Campbell’s face turned grim. “I know Wendy Adkins is a decent girl, and young people these days have their own way’s of living, but that’s supposed to stay private. Now, everyone knows about her drama.

“If our family still marries her, we’ll be the biggest joke in Oakwood. Your mom and I can’t handle that kind of embarrassment. So they have to get divorced, no matter what.”

Viola frowned, about to say something, when a frail voice came from the hospital bed. “I’m not getting a divorce

Thalia, standing at the very back, instinctively shut her eyes when she heard that.
