Chapter 89

Crystal’s face shifted, doubt flickering through, then something steadier. After a long moment, she lifted her eyes to Thalia’s. “No. I think I can change him.”
Thalia’s lips curved slightly. “Then I wish you luck.”
She looked away, but inside, something was tightening, a slow, pulsing ache wrapped around her heart like wire.
She had just introduced her own husband to another woman. The thought alone made her chest ache with a dull, persistent pain.
Her fingers moved absently, stirring the coffee in slow circles, the spoon clicking softly against the cup, the only outlet for the turmoil she refused to show.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when she heard a sound at the door.
Thalia looked up automatically, and there he was, Darion, walking toward her with that long, easy stride she knew so well.
For a brief moment, something flickered in her eyes. She had actually been hoping, just minutes ago, that he wouldn’t come.
But he was already there, closing the distance between them, his gaze warm as it settled on her.
“Out with a friend?” He glanced at Crystal, a brief, polite acknowledgment of a stranger, then pulled out the chair beside Thalia and sat down.
His arm came to rest along the back of hers, unhurried and natural, a gesture that felt both casual and deliberate, as if staking a quiet claim.
Thalia pushed aside the turmoil rising in her chest. “This is someone I recently met, Crystal Brown. She just graduated from finance and she’s been looking for work. Do you have any positions open?”
Darion’s brow lifted slightly, amusement tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Are you asking me to pull some strings?”
She met his gaze without flinching. “Is that a problem?”
It had been a long time since she’d looked at him like this, steady, unguarded, without turning away first.
Something shifted in his expression, a quiet warmth surfacing. He gave a small smile. “For you? Never.”
He turned to Crystal. “You can start tomorrow.”
Crystal’s face lit up. “Thank you so much.”
There was a barely contained excitement in her voice, her eyes bright. Her pulse had been racing ever since Darion walked
Thalia tightened her fingers around the spoon. Drawing a quiet breath, she said, “Since she’s going to be your secretary, shouldn’t you at least have each other’s contact info?”
Darion waved it off. “Just coordinate with Ryan.”
Ryan Johnson was his executive assistant, the one who managed all the secretaries, handled his schedule, and kept everything running.
Thalia’s gaze dropped, though her voice remained steady. “You should still give it to her. If something comes up while you’re

Darion studied her unnervingly composed expression and leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a murmur ‘Worried about me?
“Sure,” she said, the word slipping out with practiced indifference.
His nearness enveloped her, close enough to steal her breath, and the ache in her chest pulsed a little sharper.
She wanted nothing more than to walk away. But she hadn’t achieved what she came for If they didn’t exchange contacts, there’d be no way for them to get to know each other.
Forcing her emotions down, she lifted her gaze to meet his. “Give it to her”
