Chapter 90
She turned on her heel and strode quickly toward the restroom.
Darion noticed something was off, but his phone kept ringing, so he let her go and answered. “Yeah?”
“Darry, it’s me!” came Keith’s small, familiar voice.
Darion’s tone softened at once. “Hey, buddy. What’s up?”
“I’m bored,” Keith said. “Mom’s not home. Can you come play with me?”
Darion frowned. “Where’d your mom go?”
“I dunno.” Keith sounded subdued. “Can we go to the playground?”
“I’ll call your mother,” Darion said.
The words were barely out of his mouth when it hit him that he was calling from Miya’s own number.
He thought, ‘She gave Keith the phone and just left?’
After that scene at the bar, he couldn’t believe she’d actually pull something like this again.

A shadow of irritation passed through Darion’s eyes, though when he spoke, his voice remained gentle. “Keith, give me a moment. I’ll be there soon.”
“Okay! I’ll wait for you!” The boy’s excitement carried clearly through the phone before he ended the call cheerfully.
Darion rose from his seat and went to find Thalia, suggesting they head over together.
“Mr. Blackburn.” Crystal rose to her feet as well, watching him with visible hesitation.
Darion glanced her way. “Yes?”
Summoning her courage, she ventured, “I was wondering if you could briefly walk me through my responsibilities? I’d hate to make mistakes on my first day and waste your time.”
His response was measured. “I’ll give you a number. Get in touch, and he’ll fill you in.”
He reached for a napkin, asked the waiter for a pen, scribbled down a number, and slid it across the table before turning to leave.
Crystal looked at the number, then at his retreating figure, biting her lip with barely contained excitement.
It took splashing her face with cold water for Thalia to shake off her frustration.
But when she stepped out of the restroom, there he was, waiting nearby.
A frown creased her brow, her voice icing over. “What are you doing here?”
Darion reached for her hand. Finding her fingertips cold, he wrapped his fingers more firmly around them. “Come with me. I’m going to see Keith.”

His gaze held hers. “You need to be there, Thalia. Stand beside me, watch how I treat him, and you’ll see you’ve got me all wrong.
The irritation she’d finally managed to suppress came flaring back to life.
“I said no. What part of that don’t you understand?” Her eyes held that familiar coldness and contempt again.
Darion’s brows drew together as he pulled her toward him. “You won’t know you’ve misjudged me unless you see for yourself. You’re coming.”
“You’re impossible!” Thalia swung her bag at him, but he caught it mid-air and tossed it over his shoulder.
