Gillian felt as if she had been shocked, her body trembling slightly.
Pregnancy hormones made her easily aroused, but she didn't want to do this with York.
She reached up and brushed his hand off her shoulder, her voice utterly detached. "I don't want to."
"Forcing yourself on your wife against her will is against the law."
York's gaze darkened as he jumped to a conclusion. "Keeping yourself pure for Miles Stanton?"
His eyes flicked to the watch resting on the table, not hiding his disdain. "A watch worth a few thousand dollars bought you that easily? Are you really that cheap?"
"Gillian, I told you. This divorce isn't happening. Are you just pretending not to understand?"
Gillian gripped her towel tightly, trying desperately to suppress her trembling. After a long moment, she set the towel down, massaged her temples, and turned back to look at him. "What does it have to do with you? You have your little girlfriend, so why can't I pursue my own happiness? Do you really expect me to waste my entire life hung up on you?"
"If you won't agree to the divorce," Gillian stared straight into the man's face, her eyes icy cold, "then I guess I'll see you in court."
She stood up, her lips pale. Her fragile frame swayed, and she clumsily grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself.
York watched her reaction with cold eyes. All it took was two words about Miles to trigger such a massive response?
"Do you really think you can win?"
"Keep dreaming."
Gillian pressed her pale lips together and said nothing.
York scoffed. He didn't believe for a second she could actually get the divorce. What kind of tricks could she possibly pull?
She took a step, preparing to leave.
"Hailey says you've been stonewalling her paper. Are you deliberately making things difficult for her?"
"I'm deliberately making things difficult?" Gillian looked at him as if she'd just heard a joke. "Is that what she told you? Fine, if that's how you see it, then I have it out for her."
"There's an academic conference in the city soon. She needs that paper finished. You're going to edit it for her."
"Why should I? I have no obligation to do that." Gillian sneered. "Since your heart aches for her so much, you edit it."
