The man stood up, his voice flat. "It's supposed to thunderstorm tonight. Hailey gets scared, so I'm going upstairs to keep her company."
Gillian's heart skipped a beat.
Right. York had been moving furniture in over the last few days. The upstairs was definitely ready to be lived in now.
With that, he walked out of the room.
Gillian stared at his retreating back, taking a deep breath as her fingers curled into tight fists.
After a long while, a faint, self-deprecating smile touched her lips. She should have accepted that he didn't love her a long time ago. Why was she still letting it bother her?
Gillian massaged her aching head, warmed up a glass of water, and dragged her exhausted body to the desk to edit Hailey's paper.
Hailey had absolutely no talent in this field. The paper was a disjointed mess, requiring an almost total rewrite from top to bottom.
With only two days left until the academic conference, she had to race against the clock.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard, every crack of thunder outside feeling like a direct strike to her heart.
Staring at the dense blocks of text, her mind grew blurrier. Between the rumbling thunder and the chaotic downpour, her eyelids felt incredibly heavy.
Without realizing it, she slumped over the desk, her eyes drifting shut as she lost consciousness.
In her daze, someone seemed to enter the room and shut off her laptop.
She felt freezing, her body shivering and miserable. When she spoke, her voice was raspy. "I'm so cold..."
The man didn't speak. He held a towel, wiping the cold sweat from her forehead with what felt like tender, meticulous care.
Gillian's fingers twitched. For a brief moment, it felt exactly like that dream she'd had.
She fought hard to open her eyes.
When she finally focused on the person in front of her, the man's expression was icy and impatient.
A coldness washed over Gillian's heart.
How could he possibly be gentle with her?
Seeing that she was awake, his lips curled into a smirk. "Slacking off? You haven't even finished the paper."
Gillian's pale lips trembled slightly. Even with her sickly complexion, she possessed a breathtaking, ethereal beauty.
York's gaze, however, remained chillingly detached.
She lowered her eyes. Why would he ever be good to her?
He only came in to check if she was taking Hailey's paper seriously.
She closed her eyes briefly, swallowing the bitter helplessness welling up inside her. "I'll give it to you the night before the conference."
